when does swelling become concerning?

I have had zero swelling this entire pregnancy (38 weeks today for mobile) until last night! My ankles got all puffy and I noticed my hands and face seem fatter. My blood pressure today was higher than normal (144/80) when it's usually around 115/70ish. I had an appointment today and my doctor said that it must be the weather because almost all of his patients today have complained of some sort of swelling. But it's actually hurting now!! Like super tender to the touch. And my ankles are the size of grapefruits! It's definitely gotten a lot worse since this morning... So when is it of concern?
I took a nap when I got home and haven't been on my feet at all. I do have a headache and haven't been peeing as much but I just assumed that was latter pregnancy symptoms.

HELP!

  • Call your dr.  Sudden swelling can be a sign of pre-e. Are you pitting at all? I thought face swelling was a big no no and immediate go in.  Can you call your l & d?

  • Screw the weather excuse, I'd call.
  • This was me Friday. They sent me to the hospital to be monitored (a waste of sixxxxx hoursssss) during which time my bp went to normal. Sudden swelling has reduced since. My doctor generally blows off all my complaints.
  • Is your headache going away?

  • I would just go right into L&D to be monitored. I had to go in all the time for my BP. The nurses always said to come in if there is any question. Always better to be on the safe side. Is your hospital an IHC one? It was always really easy and low key to just go in for an NST.
Yeah I'm just at IMC in Murray! I'll give them a call and see what they say.

  • Is your headache going away?
It seems better but still bothersome.

  • Thanks everyone for your advice! I just got off the phone with my doctor and he still isn't concerned about the swelling. He said it happens to 85-90% of pregnant women and I'm lucky I avoided it until now. He said if I had a migraine or more swelling in one leg he'd be concerned but that's not the case.
I feel better just hearing that. It's funny because now I feel like.. Dang walk of shame.. Even though it was just a phone call. I've never called my doctor for anything! Oh well.

this still seems weird. sudden extreme swelling, headache and an elevated BP (144 is still higher end) seems reason enough he should have sent you to get checked to be on the safe side.   i am side-eying your dr (as i do most dr's on here wtf)

I know but he did see me today and I did express concern and I feel like he knows better than me. He said if its still really bothering me tomorrow I could go get checked out but he doesn't think it's anything alarming.
I guess if its really a problem he will see me in a few days and we can address it then! The phone call really did make me feel better though!

oh even just a run to the closest pharmacy for a check of blood pressure would be a good idea.  If it's higher, go to er now.

I'll do this when my husband gets home in an hour! Thanks!

  • Some people call for every little thing! Don't feel bad for calling! You were just doing your job protecting yourself and baby :)
The MDs are used to the calls and that's why they get paid the big bucks :)
  • Ive only called into my Dr once and it was for high bp (150/95)...the on call nurse said I could go in for monitoring so my hubby dragged me to the er...I was dreading the walk of shame but wanted to make sure the baby was okay. They induced me on the spot at 38 w 4 d. Def better to be safe than sorry with pre-e....glad you called. Keep an eye on your bp and I hope you feel better.
  • You had a legit reason to call. Hopefully your drs office put something in your records to track it.

On a side note, at least you aren't my friend who went to l&d because she had the floaters in her eyes.  When she looks at the sun or really bright lights..... Um ok?
