Babies: 3 - 6 Months

4 month old nursing times per day

How often does your 4 month old eat? EBF here.

I always always have fed on demand but it's only like 5 or 6x a day and STTN for at least a month now but looks like he's hit a weight plateau. I've always followed his cues too, so he sleeps wakes and eats when he wants to. Does not nurse to sleep anymore, he weened himself of that on his own so he is always put down awake but ready for sleep.

Anyone else hit a plateau at 4 months and what did you do about it (if anything at all)?

Thanks!

Re: 4 month old nursing times per day

  • My EBF 4-month-old eats about 7x per day and he's at the 85th %ile for weight. Babies should double their birth weight by 5 months old and triple it by 1 year. Their weight gain usually slows between 4-5 months. EBF babies double their weight and hit the plateau quicker than FF babies.

But look for the usual - peeing, pooping, and happy! Then you'll know he's getting enough and you don't need to do anything else.

  • Thank you. Yes, he's happy. Peeing, pooping and etc... But doc wants to see more weight gain so adding rice cereal or waking him at night to feed him.   I believe it's just a plateau though. If he wasn't so happy, reaching his milestones and etc then I would be concerned but he's thriving as far as I'm concerned. He's just small! In the 25% percentile. I will try to increase feedings per day from 5-6 to 7-8 though, and see what happens. Unfortunately this does mean I have to wake him or dream feed him. I'm VERY hesitant to wake a sleeping 4 month old!!

  • Adding rice cereal won't help w weight gain - it's filler food w little nutrition.

Mine are bf and eat 6x a day, sometimes 7x. With my first, he was down to 6x by 4 mo as well. He stayed at 6x until 8ish months, when he dropped quickly to 4x and then 2x at a year.

  • Actually several med professionals told me adding rice cereal will def help with weight gain.

I was literally about to post the same question. My LO was almost double her birth weight at her visit last week. She is happy and does poop. She has at least 4 or 5 soaking wet diapers a day. But she won't eat a lot anymore. I am worried about her not gaining anymore weight, when Im at work she will only eat about 6 ounces of breastmilk now. Over the past two or three weeks it has gone from 12 ounces down to this six ounces. Good to know it is normal for weight and eating to change around this time. (My LO is turning 5 months on the 23rd.)

Edit: Sorry, forgot to do how often she eats: every two to three hours. So about 3 ounces every 2 to 3 hours. EBF.

  • During the week, DD takes 3- 3.5 oz bottles at daycare and nurses between 7-10 times before or after I work. She is 4 months old. During the weekend, she nurses 10-12 times a day.

  • During the week, DD takes 2 6 oz bottles at daycare.  Then will nurse 4 more times during a 24 hr period.  Up until a week ago she was only nursing 3 times on a daycare day, but she has added a nursing session in.  Then on the weekends she nursed about the same number of times--so around 6.  Just had her weighed and she gained a 1 lb and 4 oz over the last month.  She just turned 4 months so we will have to see how between month 4 and 5 if she plateaus out or not.  I know my son when he was my daughters age took another bottle so 3 at daycare and nursed more from me.  They are all so different.  I'd just say nurse on demand and as long as there are wet diapers and poops and baby is happy you are doing great!
