Trouble TTC

Getting anxious....

I was hoping to get a little insight from you ladies. I have my HSG test this Thursday and I've been reading what people have been saying about them and it seems that they range from not so bad to excruciating. Now I know everyone is different with pain but I was just wondering what people did to prepare for theirs and/or pretty much any advice I could get! Thank in advance :)

Re: Getting anxious....

  • I have a friend who had an HSG, and she said it was awful- she ended up having to go back another day after having taken a pill to soften or numb her cervix..  Mine was fine, but I was anxious after hearing my friend's story.  And also, years ago, I'd tried to have an IUD put in and they couldn't get into my cervix.  The IUD attempt was the most painful thing I've ever experienced.  I was terrified of having that sort of pain again and expressed that to my RE.

You can take a couple of Motrin an hour before you go in.  Ask your doc if they'd prescribe a pill to help with any cervical pain or if they can numb your cervix prior to inserting the catheter.  My RE did that and it was absolutely painless.  I was surprised when she told me she was in and that the dye was flowing.  The worst part will probably be if you actually have something in and blocking your tube, but if not, it should be relatively painless.  For mine, there was a little bit of goo that was forced through by the dye, and that was a sharp pain for just a second or two, and then it was over.  No biggie!

  • I was very anxious before mine.  So much so, that the nurse offered to hold my hand for most of it, ha.

I took the recommended pain meds before.  And I had hardly any pain, just some cramping.  I don't even think I felt the catheter being inserted, because I was surprised when he told me it was in.  However, I had no blockages.  I think that's what can cause the bad pains.

    Good luck!!

  • I wouldn't take tylenol - I don't think it works as well on cramps as Aleve/Motrin/Advil. I took two Aleve about an hour before my HSG and I was fine. Really nervous, but mostly fine. For me, the preparation was the most painful and uncomfortable part but once the catheter was in I didn't feel anything.

Ask the doctor if they're using a balloon catheter - my doctor said that's one reason that some women experience intense pain.

This is how they did mine and it was very painful even though i had no blockages, but luckily short lived. I took 3 ibuprofen and a xanax before. Even if it hurts, it should be quick!

Mine was very painful... but that was due to scaring (either from Endo or from a Leep I had years ago) so when they inflated the balloon it was very painful... and when they injected the dye.

however most woman don't have that much pain... and even if you are unlucky like me the pain doesn't last long, (for me the length of a bad menstrual cramp - just worse) so if you can dig deep and deal for a few minutes it will be over before you know it - and hopefully you'll have the answers you're looking for and any pain will be worth it :)

    Good luck
