I just need to vent

I like my job, I really do.  There are days, sure, that I get frustrated but in the 7 years I've worked here "running" the office, I've never once looked for a new job.  Now that I'm pregnant with twins my husband and I mutually agreed that I'd stay home with them once they are born.  Neither of us can justify me working solely to pay for childcare.  If there were just 1 baby, I'd continue to work.  With 2, I'll enjoy being at home with them.

Ok, here's the vent.  I have made every attempt to make my doctor appointments during a time that is the least inconvenient for my job.  I will schedule them at the end of the day or very beginning of the day, totally avoiding the days I do payroll.  There is a lady who is training in to cover for me initially, but they are indeed looking for a replacement for me.  I had doctors appointments last Wednesday, a 2 hour gap between the ultrasound and OB appointment.  I also had to see a dietician (diagnosed Gestational Diabetic) and then regular physician for other issues.  I figured that since I couldn't be here at all in the morning I'd get it ok'd at work and just take the whole day and get all of the appointments done that day, rather than 2 or more part days.  My bosses were fine with that since the lady who is covering for me was able to be here the whole day.

Today I find out that when I take the whole day I'm only allowed to "claim" 4 sick hours on my paycheck.  So, here I am trying to make things easier for them instead of taking random times and days and they "penalize" me for it.  In their defense I guess, I'm the first employee who has ever needed time off like this for maternity leave.  I understand what they mean, but really, why take multiple part days instead of getting many appointments done in 1 day?  Especially when there is someone here who is willing and able to cover for me.  If I take part days she can't always be here so it would leave them with no one to answer the phone or do anything they need.

Ugh, sorry, like I said I just needed to vent.  I am now officially counting down the days.  I wasn't before, I was feeling kind of bad leaving because I do truly like my job (but will always put family first) but now the "guilt" is gone.  I do what I can to make it easier on them and they get pi$$ed.  I don't get it.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.  :)

  • That sucks ... my job is kinda the same way. I think employers just make it as difficult as possible for anyone to take any time off ;)

  • That's aggravating for sure. Just curious though why they'll only allow you to use 4 hours if you're taking the whole day. I'm former HR in my "prior life" (Pre babies lol) and something sounds off about that....The good news is that you only have to do it a little longer. That's the only thing that got me through my last few months at my job.

  • So do get paid a whole day? If you have sick or pto it seems unfair (illegal) to not let you use it. What do you get to claim if you take 2 half days?

  • I don't know the answers to your questions.  What confused me is there are a couple of times I have to take the entire morning off due to appointments.  I didn't choose the times, I was told by the doctors nurse that those times are when the doctor can see me, no exceptions. (I am seeing a different OB while mine is out on maternity leave, so all of the doctors are picking up the slack, thus fitting in their "new" patients when they can)  Anyway, I'm taking the whole morning off, 4 hours of work, and am told I can use 2 hours of sick time.  On a day that I have to leave work early (2 1/2 hours) I am allowed to use 2 1/2 hours sick time.  I don't get it.  But, like you said, it's only for a short time.  I had previously said that if they have any questions after I'm gone on where to find things (files on the computer) to just give me a call. I think my phone will be on silent once I'm gone.  Why try to help them when they're obviously not willing to help me?

As long as these babies don't come earlier than their scheduled C-section date, I only have roughly 29 working days left....not that I'm counting!  Up until yesterday I really wasn't.  Now I can't wait.

  • Sorry you're  dealing with such a negative situation now :(   You've tried so hard to work with them and due to some others who take advantage of every situation, managers seem to get all crabby about time taken in almost all offices.  Such a sad situation :(
