NWMR (unless you are a plumber): switching out a faucet

We're doing a bunch of work on our house. We put a pretty expensive faucet in a new powder room. I don't like it! Argh! It is a nice faucet but it doesn't look right with the sink and I don't think the shiny chrome finish looks right at all. I haven't told DH yet. I am wondering if we can/should consider switching it out and using it in a less visible room (we have other baths to re-do). I think it's going to always bother me, and we should have gone with a different finish.

Any clue how complicated it would be to have the plumber take it back off and put a different one on, and whether that screws up the faucet at all? I don't have the plumber's contact info so I'd have to admit to DH I'm thinking of changing it before I could just call the guy myself.

Re: NWMR (unless you are a plumber): switching out a faucet

  • I (along with two helpers) changed out the sink faucet after a plumber quoted $400. The faucet was $50. It took 3 of us two hours. It was not that difficult. Once we figured out what we pulling/pushing/screwing wrong it was a really quick change. At the time, I suggested we change out the other sink in the bathroom but the two ppl were guys and decided they'd rather watch football or play video games. Now I wish I would have changed it out myself at the time. It has been almost a year, I don't remember what we did wrong but I don't want to waste time again.

Long story short-try replacing the faucet yourself.  There are a lot of DIY videos on youtube.

  • DH and I changed out all our bathroom faucets and the kitchen one in a day. It wasn't very complicated and most of the faucets you buy at the store come with instructions on how to do it! Try it it's worth it if you don't like the one in there!

  • Thanks, all!! Too bad it was an expensive faucet to start with! I think we could put it in a different bathroom.

  • you could always list it on ebay!

I feel for you...picking out the right faucet sounds like it should be so simple!

  • Faucets are easy. The only thing I find tricky is lining up the thing that controls the plug, but that also depends on the faucet and how much clearance you have under your sink.
  • Like others have said, faucets are easy. We renovated two bathrooms ourselves (and we had no prior DIY experience). The first time, the faucet will take you a while and likely you'll get frustrated and have to go to HD ten different times. That said, the second time it will take you an hour, tops.
