On today's episode of "Shit Strangers Say"

DH & I went to Home Depot yesterday and the cashier (why is it always cashiers with me?) asks, "When are you due?" I tell her, "A week or so." After some harmless back and forth about how pregnancy is actually 10 months, not 9 (she had the balls to argue with me), she says, "Well, you think a KID is going to be expensive, try raising a MULE for 18 years! Annual vaccinations, constant appointments at the vet, not to mention the food bill! At least you can breastfeed your kid!"

We looked at each other...silent and mystified. And then we left. DH turns to me and asks, "Is that what you mean? Does that kind of shit fall out of people's mouths all the time?"

Yup.

  • Wha . . . . ?

    LOL. Wow.

I had a weird conversation with a waiter - in front of my boss - about how his wife had a tear. I can't believe that his wife would be happy with him sharing that!!!

  • My sisters MIL---ok so not a stranger---had a great wtf moment with me. she asked and i happily shared our baby's name with her. It's Lucas, or Luke for short. She had the nerve to ask if we were sure we wanted to "do that to him" bc it's a biblical name and Luke "carried the life of Christ". Ummm, what?? I was so blown away I had no idea what to say. Oh and she also said she knew 3 baby boys and they're all named Lucas. (Really crazy lady? Like who??) it must be a popular name again she says. Ugh. I know why my sister doesn't like u, nutcase
  • Walking my dog yesterday along our usual route.  There is this older lady who sometimes sits outside on her porch and waves at me and I wave back to be polite.  One time she asked to pat the dog and I've always just thought she's harmless.

Yesterday she decided to get up and walk over to me and says "I have a question - do you walk with your dog every day?"

    "Yes, pretty much."

"Well, just a tip.  I lost over 100 pounds on Weight Watchers.  You can do that and keep walking."

She had no idea I was even pregnant.

Thanks alot lady.  I've only gained 15 pounds this pregnancy and thought I was doing pretty damn good.  You have ruined it for me.

  • This wasn't exactly a stranger, but definitely NOT someone I'm close to. She's a janitor at the school I work for, but I only see her maybe once a week.

I was walking to the office, and she came behind me and shouted, "Waddle, waddle, waddle!" while walking like a duck.

I would have totally given her the stink eye and then asked who her supervisor was (and enjoyed watching her shit her pants).  That is so not cool.  One of the reasons I'm thrilled to finally be out on maternity leave is because I was so tired of the sad puppy-dog faces I was getting from everyone on my floor as they watched me waddle to the bathroom for the 8th time that day.

  • We were at a Ferris wheel and I have never gotten more pregnancy comments my whole pregnancy (or the last one) than from just the staff there that one half hour. Most were innocent "do you know what you're having?" "You look like you're about to pop?". One guy seemed to think he was being funny with "Can I ask you a question?", motioning me to lean in close, twice, then "Are you pregnant?".
But the weirdest one was, as we were leaving, a lady yelled "Bye, I can't wait until you have the baby!"

Um, I hope you can wait because I have no plans to ever see you again.
  • FI's sister got married this weekend. During the reception I went to the restroom. FSIL was in there with her bridesmaids. She had a very poofy dress on and was going use the bathroom for the first time. I told I had heard it was easier to pee backwards on the toilet with her style dress. One heard bridesmaids said that was what she suggested also. Then as I was going into a stall another bridesmaid said in an obnoxious voice, "Oh course the pregnant lady is in here when we are." *cue crickets* I think she thought her comment was humorous.

I was also told by another stranger at the wedding that he was going to request the chicken dance because he thought it would be funny if my water broke on the dance floor.

Lastly FI's great aunt (not a stranger but oh well) came over and gave me a huge hug and kiss on the cheek. She then proceeded to tell me how proud her husband and her are of us and how well we are doing in life. She also said to make sure to call them when we have the baby, so they can come visit. Sweet, huh? Kiss, weird but whatever. The next day FI's sister asked her other brother if their great aunt pounded Jesus into his head on his wedding day. I guess she gave them both speeches on how you can't let the devil in your marriage and to never let anyone break the marriage apart. She also refreshed FSIL of all of her duties as a wife. Very surprised I didn't get a "you must be married and should be ashamed you are having a child out of wedlock" speech.

BTW the wedding had an open bar

I hope you told her how pregnant you are! I would have been so freaking pissed!!
After you give birth you should take your baby on a walk and make sure you point out to her that you found an even better way to loose weight, by giving birth!

Un-freaking-believable. I don't know what it is about being around pregnant people that makes people completely lose their filter. I always get a chuckle out of the question, "Were you trying?" Um, you do realize that that's quite a personal question about my sexual activity, right?

I started getting this questions as soon as DH and I got married.  My response was always, "We're not NOT trying" .  Didn't even think about how personal of a question it is until now.  I think people assume this is an okay question to ask because there are so many more people who are open about having to "try" (or take more extreme steps) in order to conceive.
