Quinoa and/or Amaranth- have you tried it?

Good Morning-

My LO will be six months in 2 weeks and I would like to introduce him to some new "grains". He has been on solids oatmeal (avocado, pear, banana, mango) since he was about 4.5 months old.

Has anyone tried either of these items? How did it go? At what age did you start these?

I'd like to get a more complete grain to give him with the veggies and fruits. Both of these items are a complete protein which my growing little man would benefit from.

Thanks in advance!

  • Mine has had quinoa and loves it! No digestive issues and he didn't even seem to notice it was any different than his regular oatmeal.

  • I haven't given it to my LO yet but I love both :)

I was a little concerned about the size since the grains are so tiny, I worry about her aspirating or choking on them, so I'm going to cook the amaranth and press it into a loaf pan (spread about 1/2" thick) and let it thicken and then cut it so it will be like little fingers. Quinoa isn't as firm so I was going to mix it with some mashed up beans or lentils and make little patty fingers.

All this is bc we do BLW - if you don't you can do amaranth like a cereal and spoon feed, but id still worry about quinoa and would mix it with a filler before feeding.
