Infant Carrier Idiot

This might be flame worthy.

So, just realized today that baby J was BORN almost too big to use the insert in our carseat. The limit is 11 pounds. As of today, he's almost 6 weeks and nearly 14 lbs. We have a Keyfit 30 Magic, and I swear I learn something new about it every day. This thing has more features than my phone.

Just a PSA that if you haven't read your car seat manual, like me, you may want to check on weight limits for inserts to keep the seat as safe and effective as possible. I would have felt terrible if we got in an accident and he wasn't securely settled!

And a pic of him in the seat. Because I can.
Married DH <3 : 7/7/12; 3 fur babies (2 dogs and 1 cat)

It's the little removable cushion under their lower back and butt (at least for my Chicco Keyfit 30). Our weight limit is 11 lbs and since LO is petite we're still good. We might need to take it out in the next week though. Thanks for the reminder.

  • My lo is smaller as well but thanks for the reminder...I'm guessing in the next week or two as well! We have the keyfit 30 also.
  • I did the same thing. I found out a few weeks ago that she was too big for the newborn insert after 3 weeks. I felt dumb :(

  • I read the manual on mine and can't find a weight. It says "for smaller babies" or "larger babies." I feel so lost when it comes to the car seat!

This was us too. I even called the company and they said it was our choice. We took it out at 12 lbs when the pillow seemed to push her head forward instead of cradle it.
  • There's a great Facebook group to join called "car seats for the littles". You can post pictures ask questions. Lots of good recourses on there for safety.

  • Also- don't be so hard on yourself. You caught it in time. We all make bozo mistakes when we don't know what the hell we are doing. ;)

  • Since this is a car seat thread, I hope it's okay if I say this without meaning to offend at all. The black clip in the middle should be pulled up closer to his armpit level, and the straps should be pulled snuggly over his shoulders. Again, not meant as a criticism but as a tip for everyone (After all you may have just loosened the straps before taking him in or out in this pic).
Reading the car seat manual is great advice for everyone- I seriously have car seat anxiety whenever I send DS1 out with the grandparents. Shudder.

  • I would also recommend the Facebook group. Lots of good information that could potentially save lives!

Also the cute cover straps void the warranty of the seat.
  • Also not meaning to offend, but I agree with AprilRaine about the chest clip and wanted to add that aftermarket products are not approved with car seats (it is written in all manuals) so those shoulder pads should come off too.  Did your seat come with other pads? Anything that came with the seat are the only things you can use.

I second the FB group carseats for the littles, even after having 5 kids I'm still learning new things about car seats, and this is a great place to find out the newest info.  The admins are CPST's and have wonderful knowledge of seats for certain cars, tall kids, short kids, etc.
