Pretty sure I just got judged

This lady at work that I don't know too well has a son that's 3 weeks younger than DS so roughly 10 months. She brought him by my desk and he was so sweet and kept giving me his toys. I was joking and said "aw he's so sweet! Mine never gives me his toys. He's a little jerk I guess! Ha!"
I got a raised eyebrow.
Then I tried to fix it and said "ahhh but my DH is a jerk too so its in his blood" oh crap what does that even mean? WTF did I say that?! I HATE when I feel awkward and say weird stuff to fix other weird stuff.
Eyebrow goes even higher
Then she talks about how she wants him to be nice etc and thats why she doesn't let him watch TV and people criticize her for that.
Me:"oh but that's not that unusual. Especially for their age."
Her: "does Henry watch TV?"
Me: "um well yeah he watches a cartoon to keep still during breathing treatments"
Her: "oh we do breathing treatments too...but I read books instead" (another raised eyebrow)

::sigh::

  • I don't have many friends with kids. The only mom I know is SIL and whike she makes different choices we have both been pretty much aware that we are just surviving here. This was the first time I encountered another mom in the wild. Its a jungle out here folks.

  • Don't worry, this same conversation will be so much more fun for you in a year.

  • I bet your kid enjoys life more.

Now that you mention it, mine is very giggly and smiley. He kinda looked like "meh" so YAY thanks for saying that. It makes me feel a little better.

I try to brush this stuff off but it still kind of bugs me a little.

I thought about this some and I don't know what she meant by that. Unless she's talking about how some of those Disney shows tend to influence kids to be more sassy? We watch a lot of tv and DH and I are assholes so...she may have a point. Ha!
Well Bradley watches a lot of TV and is always yelling at Kung Fu Panda that hitting is not nice and "don't hit your friends"...so...

She may be kicking herself for coming across more sanctimonious than she intended. She may have felt the same awkward vibe you did.
Then she should've stopped herself after the first eyebrow raise.

  • She recommended some books her son likes. So maybe she was recovering on her part? Or trying to help the less fortunate. I'm not sure.

My DS hasn't shown any interest in books until about 2 weeks ago. He would crawl away or take it from me and chew on it. Only in the past few weeks he likes looking at the pictures and stuff.

  • She sounds real fun.  Eff her.

I would have had a chuckle at your comment

Guess I'll just have to sit on the crappy parent bench along with you and our happy fun-loving children!

My son is the same way with books. He gets really excited when the Netflix logo comes up on our tv, though. Another bad parent here.
DS is the same with books. He cannot sit still damnit, not even to watch TV for a few minutes (and I've tried). He does like to play with our movies though.

Mine will sit still if there is singing. Once the song is over he's like "I'm out!" For his breathing treatment we play song clips on Huli from Sesame Street or the opening/closing songs from Pororo or Tinga Tinga Tales.
