3rd degree tears-still in pain?

I'm 4 weeks, 2 days PP and had two 3rd degree tears during delivery. I was on prescription pain meds for about 2 1/2 weeks then I stopped taking those and started taking only ibriprofen as needed, usually twice a day. Some days the pain is worse than others but yesterday was pretty intense. My doctor told me it can take 3-4 months to heal but I didn't expect the pain to still be this strong a month after.

For those of you who had tearing, especially 3rd degree tearing, how is your recovery going? Is this pain still normal for being 4 weeks out? I would love any input that you have.

Re: 3rd degree tears-still in pain?

  • I'm only 3.5 weeks out, but my tears still hurt a little. It depends too, seems like one side will hurt more for a few days and then the other side will hurt. I don't have any advice, just wanted to say you're not alone. It definitely didn't last this long with my first..

  • Sorry to hear you are still hurting! Have you been able to use a sitz bath?

I had a few 2nd degree tears and 5 weeks pp it mostly just hurts when I sneeze, a little uncomfortable when I cough. Hang in there!
  • 3rd degree and still uncomfortable at 5 weeks pp, but MW said it looks like I'm allergic to the stuff they stitched me up with :(
  • @Skalbrecht I have done the sitz bath and it helps for a day or so and then the pain just comes right back. I know if I do too much the day before it always starts hurting but that's more of a dull, achy pain. The pain that I had last night was sharp and bad enough to keep me from sleeping well. I was hoping to hold off talking to my doc until my 6 week appt but I'm thinking that might not happen.

  • Oh no! I think I would try to be seen then.
  • I only had a second degree but I could steal feel aching at 4 weeks but not real pain it was a lot worse on busy days
  • 5 weeks PP and I'm still sore. It's better than it was (I had to take prescription pain killers every 4 hours) but it's still painful. I had a "U" shaped 2nd degree tear that left me with a weird extra little flap of skin. I'm anxious for my 6 week appointment to see if things are healing right.

  • Mine are still super tender. At 4 weeks I didn't feel anything but the stitches kind of falling out or dissolving. I figured it was normal and I was ok to wait until the 6 week appt. As long as there is no blood. Def call your OB and get their opinion.

  • 4 weeks PP with 3rd and partial 4th degree tears. I'm healing up pretty well, no more sharp pain, but definitely still sore and tender (especially after a long day of being on my feet.)

  • @MrsMooney I'm definitely going to give that a try. Thank you! I probably have just been going too much like you said but its so hard to rest when all I want to do is get out if the house!

  • I also had a 3rd degree tear. The pain hasn't been awful...I can definitely tell when I have done too much though. I haven't let up on taking Motrin every 6 hours so maybe that is masking some of the pain.

My biggest concern is the lasting effects of having a tear like this? For all the moms that have experienced this before or moms that are further PP... Do you still experience any incontinence (sorry TMI)? What about sex? Will it ever be the same down there? I literally cry about this often...besides the fact that it looks like a hot mess down there, I am devestated about the incontinence and sex thing. I am only almost 3 weeks PP but still...

Please tell me this gets better!!
I'm lame and can't get my sig to work. This will have to do...

  • I had a 3rd degree tear with DS1, and it took several months before the soreness was completely gone. I wasn't in "pain" per se, but definitely not back to normal. And I healed well and quickly according to my OB. Sex was not comfortable the first few times starting at about 8 weeks pp. It got way better as time went on. We just had to take it very slowly and use lots of lube.

  • FYI, if you soak some make up remover cotton pads in witch hazel and line your pad with them, it helps the healing. The stuff stinks, but it does help the discomfort!
