Planned or Pleasant surprise?

Was this a planned pregnancy for you or was LO a pleasant surprise? Ours was a surprise. I thought I had the flu or had a bad hangover but the "hangover" never went away. So after 2/3 days, I thought it was the flu. I just felt different and had fatigue with a queasy stomach. I have large fibroids so I thought they had finally started messing with AF and that's why she was a week late.
DH and I have been together for 16 years and never slipped up so I totally didn't think anything was different. A close friend told me to take a hpt and for shits and giggles, I did. I was so nonchalant about it that I put the test in a bag after I did it and took it with me because I was rushing out. When I saw a BFP, I had to pull the car over. I didn't tell DH for 3 days. I told him by taking a picture of the BFP with his phone and made it his screen saver. He was shocked but happy after it sanked in. I always wanted 3 children and DH wanted another one too, but after DD1 turned 5, we gave up the thought. We didn't want them to be too far apart in age. Haha! 5 years was too big of a gap so now they're 11 years! There's a 9 year gap with DS1.

Was LO planned or a surprise?
How did you tell your DH/SO?

  • LO was planned.  We miscarried in June of 2012 and then waited until October to start trying and in November I got my BFP!  We were on vacation in the NE and the last day we were leaving Cape Cod- LO was conceived.

I knew I was pregnant before I tested- I was 2 days late and I'm never late on my period- so I tested and DH was with me when I tested.  Best news ever!

  • Planned. We tried for 2 months, then decided we were just going to let it happen when it was supposed to happen. On that third month, we got our BFP!

  • Kind of both. We decided to stop trying to prevent it in late September to just see what happens and then bam first month got pregnant which I was not expecting because my cycles were always all over the place and I wasn't charting.

  • Kinda both. I wanted to try for a Fall baby, and we weren't being super careful so it happened a few months early. Having a July baby confirmed my suspicions that being in the 3rd trimester in the summer would suck.

  • 100% planned.
  • Kind of both for us too. We weren't trying but we weren't preventing either. My mom had a lot of infertility issues and after we got married (I was 33 then) we figured we would stop preventing and see how long it took. Well fertile mertle over here got pregnant after 1.5 months ;)

Definitely a surprise. I took a HPT on a whim, (well sort of, there had been two occasions where we didn't use a condom) 3 days before I expected AF. I was not expecting it to be positive at all; in fact, I stuffed the test back in the box, threw it in the bathroom drawer and slammed it shut. I didn't tell DH for 3 days either because I didn't know how and couldn't even say the words out loud. When I went to tell him I couldn't even speak but somehow he knew and just said, "really??" and I nodded and started crying. He was super excited right away though and could not wait to tell people. It was really cute :)
I cried too when I pulled over. I know people passing by were like wtf? They weren't sad tears, more like your DH...really????

  • A surprise (a very pleasant one)! It was a Sunday night and we were gutting our kitchen- literally ripping cabinets down and taking a sledge hammer to the walls. I ran upstairs to pee and just had a weird feeling that I should take a test. It was positive and I was in complete shock, then I started crying. Then I came downstairs and told my husband and he was so excited!! It was such a surreal, amazing feeling.

Happy surprise. We were using the pull out method and I thought I was getting my period so DH didn't pull out. My doctor said that spotting around ovulation can happen. I must have mistaken that spotting for the start of my period.

ETA: I knew my fetal-versary because we only had sex once that month seeing as DH was away on business trips. I had to tell him over the phone because he wasn't coming back for a month and I didn't want to wait.
We used withdrawl too and it worked for all those years. DH had what we call an 'E' without the 'O' for the sake of discretion. But it's the most awesome oops he ever made, we're so in love with her. She's just what we needed at this time in our lives.

  • Both. We were going to start trying in february. Since i didnt know how long it would take to concieve, we decided the day of conception to stop preventing it. I knew i was pregnant before we went to bed. Two weeks later it was confirmed with a hpt.

  • Pleasant surprise. I was on the pill but messed up and had to take two pills a couple of times in the week or two before Sandy. Especially surprising since I was told I would most likely have difficulty conceiving. We had planned on saving up money and starting now actually. Such a happy surprise!

  • Planned... We had stopped BC in August and were TTC the old fashioned way (no fancy charting or tracking... Just bone when we feel like it without protection) and I took a HPT after my cycle went a little long (it's about 32 days but not perfectly regular when not on BC so I took a test at 33 days because the wait was killing me!)
This seriously made me LOL!! The boning part... I haven't heard that word in awhile...

  • A little bit of both. We had lost a baby in late May. I started charting in June and didn't want to go back on the pill. We knew we would try again in the new year once mh's contract was renewed.
I was surprised by the BFP only because I had thought our timing was completely off. I guess we lucked out!!

    This is exactly me :)
  • Planned and pleasant surprise.  We were trying for a few months but had decided to take a month off because of a trip to Vegas that we planned.  Well surprise, I ovulated a few days earlier than I had ever before and got pregnant.

I found out on Halloween.  I left the test in a bag written "Trick or Treat!"

  • We decided to see "what would happen" for three tries without a condom. Well it worked. So I guess both in a way. We weren't trying for long, but I didn't expect to be pregnant either.
  • Kind of both for us too. My ob drilled into my head that on average it takes 6 mo if trying to get pg. So I removed my iud, and we tried the first cycle, which didn't work. Then we talked and decided that we were going to wait till the summer to keep trying because we wanted to plan a big wedding in July. We found a beautiful venue and set a date of-get this- July 27. The day we were getting ready to sign the contract I took a test because I was late. We weren't expecting to get pg so soon, and had put trying on hold, so in that sense it was a surprise. However, it's not like we were preventing it very well. We ended up having a small ceremony in January, and our LO was due the day after we had originally set as our wedding date.

  • I love this thread :) makes me happy to read about everyone's different experiences!

We got married last October and had decided to stop preventing after that. We got back from Vegas on the 11th and DTD on the 15th (I know the exact date since it was so close to our wedding date). We were sitting at home one night in November and I told DH that I felt like I was pregnant. He laughed and didn't believe me. The next morning I took a HPT and it was positive!

We were ecstatic and a little surprised that it happened so fast!

Surprise! We weren't preventing, but due to FI's meds and previous radiation treatment we thought he was shooting blanks. But nope, he has swimmers! Telling him was an emotional experience... he loves kids and wanted to be a Dad so badly, but was terrified that the child could get Lupus too, despite his specialist saying it's not genetic. It was over the phone because he works out of town and I couldn't wait. He was speechless, and so scared, I could hear it it the few words he managed to sputter out before saying "I gotta go find a cigarette... Can I call you back?" When he called back, he'd calmed down a little, and was really exited. Now we a new love of our life, our baby boy. :-D
This tugged at my heart strings again, beautiful!

  • DD was planned. I went off BC in March, and started charting in August. I had started my first month of acupuncture for fertility and I got my second line on 11-11-12! It was the best feeling!!

  • Surprise - I honestly didn't think that I would get pregnant as quickly as I did.  We were very lucky to not have any problems but with our ages (mid to late 30s) and the fact that I was on the pill for over 12 years, I thought for sure that it would take us a while.  I got pregnant in the two weeks between stopping the pill and DH's hernia surgery.

  • Biggest surprise ever!
