hystosomogram unnecessary?

I think I spelled it right? Its where they put water up the uterus and ultrasound to see if any damage to tubes or anything. So I had one before I got pregnant with my son. We were having trouble ttc because I have pcos. It showed nothing wrong. I took metformin and clomid and had my beautiful little boy. So we are tryin again and I have a different specialist this time and he wants to do the same procedure as my other dr (who moved to a different state) but I had no complications with my son. Is this an unnecessary test? Or should I have it done?

I'm not sure exactly which test you are talking about. An HSG is where they put dye into your uterus and up into your tubes, then typically take xray pics to make sure the dye comes out your tubes with no issues.

An SHG or SIS is where they just put the saline into your uterus, and check with an U/S to make sure there are no abnormalities in your uterus, the saline does not go into your tubes.

We're not Drs, so if your Dr is recommending you have this procedure done again, I'd go with that. Plus I know with an HSG, there is a very high rate of pregnancy within the following 2 cycles, so if you're actually TTC then it certainly couldn't hurt to have the test done again.

    Good luck.

  • I am not sure which one either, but I feel both are very necessary, EVEN if you had one done before.  Things can change.  Good Luck!

  • you could have developed a blockage at any point, so it might be worth having it done. i had a feeling mine would be clear but my doctor made me get one just to make sure all the bases were covered. it wouldn't make sense to do IUI or IVF if you have a blockage. and sometimes just the process of having the HSG is enough to unblock the tubes.
