Are there pediatricians that specialize in preemies?

DS was born in 2009 at 36w3d. We went with a regular pediatrician at the time, but I was often frustrated by their lack of knowledge about the fact that he had come a little early. They just didnt seem like they could always answer the questions I aphid relating to that. Since the twins were born so early (33 weeks), we are now considering finding a different pediatric practice in the area, that maybe has more experience working with preemies and twins. Any of you had any luck with this? Do these type of pediatricians exist?

Re: Are there pediatricians that specialize in preemies?

  • The only preemie specialists I know of are neonatologists and I don't think they normally work outside of hospitals. Maybe ask your babies' neonatologist for a rec. They would hopefully know good pediatricians with preemie experience.

  • My pediatrician worked at the NICU for four years at Stanford before going into private practice. So, she has special experience with premies. I am very luck to have her. She has also been my best friend since we were four years old. Very lucky indeed.

  • My advice would be to call the NICU and ask if they have anyone they recommend. You can also call pediatricians and ask for their experience with preemies.

  • The Pedi that I take my boys to use to work in a NICU.  I chose a medical group based on recommendations from my MOTC- then I looked at their website which listed all their Pedis and their special interests- neonatal experience was listed for her.  I love her- she was so good with my boys and helping me to see that they were growing great and reaching their milestones on time.
  • Great, thanks for the advice ladies! I'll ask around in the nicu for some recommendations.
  • The NICU recommended mine and he has tons of experience with preemies.
  • Our pedi just happened to have done a number of years at the nearby Level III NICU (where our girls ended up) early in his career -- but, again, the majority of preemie concerns/specialization is handled by our neo.
