Anybody find their Prenatal to be the culprit?

So I noticed yesterday that I always seem to get a second wave of nausea and just general ill-feeling (like I have the flu) after lunch which is when I take my first dose of my prenatal and the second at dinner. And this has been happening since I first started it. I switched from one excellent brand that didn't have iron to this for the iron but I decided to drop it for today and take my previous one I loved and see how it went as I have been pretty miserable- not just nausea but just feeling like utter crude and basically hating all food or thought of it and life. SO I skipped lunch and took my previous multi (which always gives me a bunch of energy I'm assuming due to the level of b-vitamins in it) and lo and behold I felt GREAT this afternoon changing literally NOTHING else. Still wearing sea bands, still had my dose of unisom the night before and B6 at breakfast etc. I actually could eat food and GOOD, healthy food that I wanted to want to eat instead of having horribly intense food aversions and feeling like death warmed over. Could it really be that simple? The iron (and possible the few extras this supplement had) affecting me this way? I'm going to continue not to change anything and do some more observance (and I still have to get an enteric coated iron supp for night time) but it gives me hope!

  • I don't get sick off of mine. My doctor gave me about 20 different samples and I managed to find one that works. My cousins wife always got sick off of hers and her doctor told her to take flinstone kids chewable vitamins and those worked for her. Maybe you could ask your doctor to see what he would reccomend you doing or taking since they're making you not feel good. Good luck!

  • Yup! That was me! I took the same prenatal prior to my BFP with no noticeable side-effects. But as of the past month, I had to change it up. I started drinking it at night because I couldn't handle the nausea it gave me. The only time I threw up was when I took the prenatal without enough food. It got to the point that taking my prenatal became this dreadful event- drinking it at night, stuffing five crackers in my mouth, and laying in the fetal position for the horrid feeling to cease.

Then a friend told me about some iron-free gummy prenatals. Lo and behold, that aspect of the nausea is gone. I take them in the morning and go about my merry way (still have regular nausea, but it's no longer exacerbated).

  • Prenatals have always made me nauseous. My doc also recommended flu stones gummies AND they are delicious :)

  • Yep! I took prenatals with no problems before getting pregnant, and then by week 6 of being pregnant, I felt just yuck all the time. My doctor told me to stop taking my prenatals and instead supplement with 1 mg of folic acid a day. I still feel slightly yuck, but there is noticeable improvement off of the prenatals!

  • I switched from the gummies to the tablets, because the gummies were making me nauseated.  I am pretty sure the tablets will make me sick when I hit 3rd trimester, so I'll switch back then.

  • Poking head in...

I have high iron to begin with so I take an iron free multi vitamin with folic acid supplements and baby aspirin.  I have also had next to no morning sickness.  I have wondered if some prenatals may exacerbate nausea...  Anyway just my two cents.  I am sure its a combo of me being lucky, having a very strong stomach, and not taking traditional prenatals...
  • I highly recommend the gummy ones. I think my prenatals might be the only part of my day that doesn't cause nausea.

  • Sadly I have to take extra iron and that can make for a very unhappy tummy. I tried chew prenatal and found I could not stand the smell. Currently taking OTC, the pill is largeer but no smell so it's not as bad. Try a few to see what works best, but of course check with midwife/ob

I have never had an iron issue so I will ask my doctor and see if I still need to supplement, but my multi from before has all the correct dosages of vitamin in their correct bio available form including folate which is why I was taking it with baby aspirin as well among many other supplements (I have lupus) so I will continue to do that and see what doc says about iron. My AM nausea is still a factor and I still throw up then, however, this was a different, weird nausea and whole body physical unwellness that started every afternoon after the prenatal.
