Hello! I have a 6 month old who is very comfortable taking bottles with his caregivers while I'm at work. I've been reading up on when to introduce cups and would like to do this (I think) to promote some independence but have some questions. Will having him use a cup be too easy and could that cause him to want to wean earlier? How do I prepare "sippy cups" for caregivers? Right now I always have bottles in the fridge and they are easy to heat up in warm water, would I do the same with cups or would it make sense to keep milk in milk bags (which would be wasteful)? If doing this is a good idea, what cups would you recommend? Should I start out with ones that use straws? Sorry for all the questions...
Re: sippy cups to serve breastmilk?
We started with a sippy that had silicone tip that was recommended for ages 4 months plus with LO was 6 months. He would drink a few sips and then just play with it. I finally got tired of him wasting the BM so switched to water.
Then one day around 7.5 months he got ahold of my water cup with a straw & low and behold he got water out of it. So I bought some of those Lansinoh Momma sippys with straws. At 10 months we replaced one of his daycare bottles with a sippy of milk. By 11 months he was completely off bottles.
He still nurses when he's with me, so we haven't had any early weaning issues. We just store milk in the sippy cup in the fridge. The momma ones have a lid that twists to cover the straw.
