Cold Sores

Yea, I get them. If you're going to ridicule me like the kids I went to school with, let me give you my " I hate you " in advance.

I have gotten them my whole life... They have certainly gotten less frequent as I've gotten older but I've got a mother brewing on what feels like my entire top lip. I put meds on it, and I've got a lemon juice compress on it now but does anyone have any luck with anything else? I need a homespun magic spell that stops this thing in it's tracks, asap!

Re: Cold Sores

  • 1/2 a valtrex on the reg, a whole one when you get an outbreak. Ask your doc for the Rx, it's worth it!

  • Ugh I get the herp as well. Tea tree oil is supposed to help. My Dr gave me an Rx for valtrax/acyclovir because I was getting them monthly with my period. Once I kinda broke that cycle I have the Rx that I take only when I feel one coming on, since then they've been way less noticeable and less painful. Sidenote H has never gotten a cold sore from me. I think he's immune and I hope Sadie is too!
Yes, I had a valtrex rx for years, I really need to get another. It was a lifesaver. Tea Tree Oil... Got it. If only I had some!! WAhh!

  • Agree with the Valtrex recommendations.  I never want to go thru another cold sore without it!  I never found abreva to help much.  I've heard taking LLysine helps but again, never saw the positive effects myself.

I have never found Abreva to be helpful... The only OTC med I have had luck with is Campho phenique. It has a drying med and then another for scabs that is really helpful.

    Freaking cold sores.

My H gets them and he takes a couple valtrex twice a day until it clears up. He's also used the campho phenique and that helps too. So far I've been lucky and haven't got them from him.

The only things that speed up the healing for me is Valtrex (prescription) and Abreva. I apply Abreva the second I get that itchy tingle and I pop a Valtrex once I can afford a script. Both are expensive though.
I feel your pain i've gotten them my entire life and like you as i've gotten older they aren't as often but anytime I get that itch I immediatley go into panic mode. If one makes it's presence known im pretty much in hiding until it's gone. So embarrassing and they hurt!

  • Second the acyclovir. Our daughter spent a week in the NICU because I realized I had one in my nose (yes I get them in my nose, have one now as a matter of fact) after I started nursing and it can be deadly to newborns. I stick with Rx stuff and don't bother with anything else. Although Lysene I had some success with, but generally my case is just too severe. I get them on my hands too. And I don't know about you, but I feel like crap when I get them, tired and headachey, more so than usual.

    TTC since October 2009
    2 failed IUIs with Clomid
    IVF #1, ER 10/29/2011

Lost my dear husband, October 3, 2012. You are the bear of my heart dear, and nothing can take that away.

Yikes! I have gotten one in my nose before, and that was a nightmare. I knew you could get them on your eyelids but I didn't know about the hands! I always get one after I've been sick, especially if I've had a fever. But then other times I'm completely healthy! Who knows. I didn't know that though about babies and cold sores...That is so scary! How did I not know that!!?!
