Natural Birth

Pre Eclampsia

Hi Everyone-

I mostly just follow the board and get inspired by others natural birth stories, but today I need some advice! I went to the midwife practice and saw a new midwife. I have had an uneventful pregnancy, no complications, and healthy. Today she mentioned that last appointment and today there is a tiny trace of protein in my urine. My BP is elevated it was 134/80. Nothing crazy! I also have swelling in my feet which all the other midwives have seen and not been concerned. Well today she told me that she thinks I have pre eclampsia. She did blood work and sent me home to collect urine for 24 hours. I told her I am still working and she didn't say I need to stop. I go back tomorrow with my urine sample and to have more blood work done. Then on Friday I have an ultrasound and see the midwife who I like the most and who has seen me through the pregnancy.

I called my husband in tears and his family who isn't as on board with natural birth as I am said why don't they just induce me now. My due date is Thursday. The midwife said if I really have pre eclampsia after all this testing that they will induce on Friday. In the meantime I took the rest of the week off and I am going to walk like crazy, bounce on my ball to try and get this little baby moving on her own! Her heartbeat was perfect today too and she is still moving around a lot.

Anyone else experience this? I feel like the midwife jumped the gun with her concern, but when you read everything about it, it is very scary and dangerous.

Re: Pre Eclampsia

  • From my experience my MW doesn't become concerned with BP until it is over 150. I think your MW is just being safe. It would be better to catch it right away than let it get out of control and put you and baby in danger.

  • It's good that they are monitoring you, but it could very well be nothing. Swelling at the end of the pregnancy is common, your BP doesn't seem that high (I'm pretty sure I had numbers like that at certain points) and urine screens have a high rate of false positives. My CNMs actually stopped doing urine screening routinely because they said they were getting so many false positives and women were worrying unnecessarily.  So for my second I peed in a cup once at my first appointment and that was it.  Again, I'm glad they are checking to make sure all is well, but I don't think an induction is imminent.
  • I had preeclampsia with my 1st, my DD and was induced with 140/90 BP at 37 weeks. I wonder if they can start u on something other than pitocin. Bc just bc u may need to get induced doesn't preclude u from still going naturally. If u can make a plan with your midwife about a gradual more gentle induction u may still avoid the epi and other interventions. Good luck!!
  • I had a blood pressure similar to yours and ended up with preeclampsia. My protein levels were just over the threshold. I was induced at 39 weeks. I was diagnosed with HELLP one week after delivering. Better safe than sorry in my opinion.
  • Thank you everyone. Got both blood results and urine tests back and I don't have it. Met with my favorite midwife who said the other lady jumped the gun and to relax. I had a BPP ultrasound Friday and baby scored 8/8, perfect! I have another one tomorrow. I am 40wks 4days. Any day now!
