Twin talk vs Words

Hello Ladies..it's been a while.. :)

Okay I have a question for you. My DD is way more verbal than my DS, is this normal? Did one of your twins/triples/quads speak more than the other (s)?  I ask him to show me things and he'll point or take me to the subject, but his sister will say the word or babble something close to it. They babble back and forth to themselves, but she seems to be talking more. Should I be worried? TIA! :)

Re: Twin talk vs Words

  • My two are kind of like that. I really noticed it lately when on a few occasions they are around other toddlers their age and the others are speaking 4 to 5 word sentences.
I asked my pediatrician about it at their 2 yr check up and she said the typical standard for a full term 24 month old is 40 words. Yeah, we are no where close.
She referred me to a program where someone comes to my home and does an evaluation. I'll find out if my concerns are valid in 2 weeks when the rep is here. Depending on what state you live in, there may be a similar program available that has a sliding scale for out of pocket expense, if that is also a concern. I'm in Georgia and this program ("Babies Can't Wait" goes to age 3.
I'm not freaking out, more-so actually relieved that they are going to be evaluated. My oldest had 2 years of speech therapy from 3.5 to almost 5 years of age and it helped him tremendously.

  • Mine are only 15 months but I do notice that DD babbles more than DS.  When they talk to each other it's all screeching but apparently they know what they are saying. One can be in one room and the other in another room and they will screech back and forth and then all the sudden one gets up and goes to the other.  It's *so* weird.
I also notice that DD tries to mimic what I am saying more than DS.  BUT...I can ask DS who I am and he will say mama.  More like mmmmmmmmmmmmmama but it's very close.  DD is no where near this.  They both say dada but everything is dada.
When DD wants to talk she literally goes into babble that makes no sense, not even a single sound like dada.  When she's excited though...everything is baba or vava.

If words don't start coming by 18 months, I think I will start worrying.
