High-Risk Pregnancy

Intro: diagnosed with GD

Hi, ladies. I've mostly been on the Pregnant after a loss board until now. I am on my third pregnancy but miscarried the first two in the first tri. I'm 32 weeks and was diagnosed with GD 2 weeks ago. However, I started following the diet 3 weeks ago, after I bombed my 1 hr with a 169. Eek. I am currently diet controlled and doing okay--numbers in the 80s and 90s except after breakfast when I tend to crack 100. My highest number was 119 2 hrs after eating. My concern is that my OB seems freakishly chill about the GD. He says that if I'm controlled I don't need any ultrasounds (none are scheduled for the rest of my pregnancy) or an induction. Is this a normal treatment approach? Shouldn't I be doing at least an occasional NST? I'm also worried about placental deterioration, especially since I'm fairly sure I went undiagnosed for a few weeks. Sorry this is so long. What do you ladies think?

I was diet controlled, but was also AMA so that might have affected my care. My doctor didn't order any NSTs until week 36, and didn't talk about induction until week 39 (and probably wouldn't have pushed for one, except I was on board as I also worried about placental deterioration--and then my BP went up and made the decision for us).  I think there's a wide range of treatment levels for GD, and your numbers sound REALLY good, but if you're worried (and I don't blame you), you should talk to your doctor about your specific concerns at your next appointment.  I felt like my doctor was really hesitant to suggest induction because so many women are really really against it these days.

Thank you so much for the info! There aren't too many women with GD on PGAL and I really just didnt know what the standard of care was at all. I appreciate your help! I have an appt next week, so I'll go over my concerns in detail with my OB then.

  • I am diet controlled as well.  My doctor has been very chill about it too.  Which I like.  A few weeks in my numbers went up to around 126 and my specialist wanted to put me on glyburide.  I was totally against it.  I stalked to my doctor and she said 126 is really nothing to worry about.  The meters can be inaccurate very often.  I tested both my hands at the same time and noticed every time I would get different numbers...

My doc had me get one US at 31 weeks just to get the size of the baby, and I haven't had another.  The baby was sized fine.

I didn't have my first NST until week 37, and now I receive them weekly.  I like the fact that she's so easy going otherwise she would spin me into panic lol.  I would say talk to her, make a list of questions/concerns and let her answer your worries.  And yeah your numbers rock!
  • I'm super jealous of your numbers. I didn't even see numbers that great when I was on insulin!

Really, your numbers sound fantastic. If they continue like that the remainder of your pregnancy, than I would not be concerned about the dr being so relaxed. If they start going higher, even if you remain diet controlled, then I might inquire about at least an extra ultrasound towards the end, but it sounds like you are doing great so far!

  • Your numbers sound great!  I was diet controlled GD for my first pregnancy and now on a low dose of glyburide for this second GD pregnancy.  Other than faxing in my blood sugar numbers weekly, there isn't much more monitoring other than a 28 week growth ultrasound.  NST won't start until week 36.  If you want more support, there is a group of GD mamas on Facebook where we discuss diet. exercise, meal ideas, testing, etc.

Good luck!  I am also expecting a rainbow baby after 3 losses.

  • Hello! I am a diabetic. I just replied because your numbers are great and also some OB's are a little more lenient on numbers than some. My OB was this way and he was GREAT! Meaning I had to take my sugars 1 hr after each meal (instead of 2). As long as I wasn't over 120 he has happy (even though the norm is 95-100 for pregnant women). As long as my morning fasting # was less than 100 he was happy. Any time it got over that I had to adjust my dosage. I also didn't start my NST until I was 34-35 weeks so you may have a couple more weeks to go. I only had 2 u/s throughout my whole pregnancy. I had one at 20 weeks and they other at 37 weeks. I know it's different have GD than being a diabetic pre pregnancy but we do sometimes have some similarities. Good Luck and Congratulations!!
  • Thank you, everyone! It really encourages me to know that my doctor is handling things as would be expected. I moved in the middle if this pregnancy and had only been seeing him for a few weeks when I got the dx so it's hard to be super comfortable with everything. Thank you all for the info; it definitely helps!

  • Your numbers are a lot lower than mine! I wouldn't worry, especially if you're also feeling good.
  • Thanks, Petunia. They've crept up a bit since I posted and are now hovering around 100 except for fasting. But, still doing well and under the guidelines. Thank you for the support!

  • I am on insulin twice a day and am jealous of your numbers! Pat yourself on the back and breathe a sigh of relief mama, you are the best case scenario in this mind blow that is GD.

I have had to have NSTs and weekly appointments since 32 weeks, and am supposed to have an ultrasound in 2 weeks to determine when medically necessary induction will occur. Trust me, it's not fun.

@katielou711: thanks for responding. I'm so sorry your GD is an aggressive PITA. It sounds pretty terrible. :( I know i am quite blessed right now with excellent control. I am lucky. I hope everything goes well with your induction and will be thinking of you and your LO. Thanks again for the info.

  • @kdc2007: thanks for the info! My doctor did schedule an ultrasound for two weeks from now (35 weeks) as I keep losing weight on this stupid GD diet. I feel better knowing they are being proactive. Thank you!

  • I'm due any day now and have had gd this pregnancy. Mine has been completely controlled with diet thank goodness and my doc has been pleased and chill about it too. Basically if you control it well "it's like you don't have it" according to him. Everything is ok and I haven't needed nst's
  • @julie1122: thank you! That's really helpful. GL with your delivery and your LO.
