LO won't take bottle. Need suggestions please

My LO will be 4 months old on Saturday. I EBF, but he has always had a bottle at least once a week or more from daddy or someone else. He'd fuss for a minute or so, but then take it fine. He never ate a lot from the bottle, but enough to get to the next feeding. Until this week that is. My DH tried to give him the bottle yesterday while I was gone for a bit. LO refused to eat. He'd arch his back, cry, spit out the milk, choke and have a fit. My DH tried on and off for 2 hours. He tried changing positions, turning on the vacuum cleaner (that worked before), covering LO's head with a light blanket to not get distracted, everything he could think of to help him eat. LO ended up going 6 hours without eating. Tomorrow I have to go back to work (waaa) and I'm afraid LO won't eat at the babysitter. Anyone else been through this or have any suggestions?

  • I have been through this a couple weeks ago, exact same thing. First day she went to my MIL (she watches her) she would not take a bottle just cried the whole time, I was afraid that if she didn't eat she would be up all night nursing, but she didn't. I nursed her from like 4p until her bedtime at 7p then next day she took 2 bottles, the next day 4 bottles and now she takes them like a pro. I use platex even flo bottles they work great. Just keep trying!

  • Did you taste the milk? DD did that one time because her milk was bad.

  • It was milk I just pumped each morning and he tried to give it to our son just about 3 hours later so I don't think it could've been bad milk. Also, yesterday when I got home, LO took the bottle for me in one second with no fuss and sucked it down. Today he would not take the bottle for me. Arched back and cried
  • I'm sorry it doesn't sound like this problem would be solved by changing bottles. At that time he was refusing the bottle would he nurse fine, or did you try? Sometimes my LO will do that and do the same thing with nursing like he's gassy.

  • I went through this with DS1. He actually refused the bottle several days when I went to work and just nursed when I got home. He eventually started taking it again but he had a bizarre few weeks where he just wouldn't take it. That was the beginning of teething for him. Just keep trying and remember a baby won't actually starve themselves. If he is really truly hungry he will take a bottle!

  • Thanks! I'll try putting a shirt of mine in his bag. I know he'll get past this bump in the road, but I hate it for him.
