Poop and Scratches

Okay, couple of questions....

For those of you that ebf, at about what age, if any, did your LO start pooping less? I know that it's common for ebf babies to go a while without pooping, which is why I'm not too worried, but LO hadn't pooped since Thursday morning. She's had plenty of wet diapers, and she's farting, just no poop. Like I said, I'm not too worried, but I just want to reassure that it's normal.

Also, does anyone else still have a problem with their LO scratching their face? We went through a period of time where she didn't do it anymore, but now, when she gets upset, she starts scratching at get face, usually around her eyes. She currently has a small scratch right under her eye from the last time she was crying. :(

Re: Poop and Scratches

  • My LO poops what seems like 40 thousand times a day so I'm sorry but I can't help you with the poop problem although I think if your LO hasn't popped by Tuesday maybe to contact your paed. Goes she seem uncomfortable?

My ds is constantly scratching his face. It looks like he's just come out if a bitch fight everyday! I try and keep his nails super short but they seem to grow at a rapid pace. Have you tried scratch mittens?

  • As far as pooping goes I'm not much help. At around 5 weeks she went from a BM at every meal to maybe 4ish a day. She also stopped pooping at night last week which is kind of nice.

LO started scratching her face again now too (despite me cutting her nails every few days). I don't know how old yours is (I'm mobile), but I've read around 7 weeks they begin discovering their hands a bit more and end up rubbing their eyes, chewing on their fingers etc. more often which could result in more scratches.

  • About week six little A started doing what we've been calling "epic poops" every three days. Pedi suggested drinking more water but wasn't concerned since she kept producing wet diapers. We have trouble with face scratching too- I've heard trimming regularly with those little scissors is the way to go but I've yet to try them.
  • My LO scratches like crazy. I keep his nails short but they grow so quick. I love the onsies and sleepers with the built in mittens. You just roll the extra fabric over their hands when you need them.

  • I should have mentioned that LO HATES wearing the mittens.  She will freak out when she has them on her hands, so we haven't had her wear them for quite a while.  Her onesies have the little things that you can pull over her hands, but her arms are too long and she hates having that done, too.  We swaddle her at night, and only once or twice has she gotten her arms out of the swaddle.

  • Jr. Poops every change it seems. He scratched his face twice yesterday and I put hand mitts on him until I could trim his nails. I hate seeing his face scratched up.

  • Mine usually poops once a day, but up to 3 times. Sometimes he will go 2 days without a poop. Me and my pedi aren't worried.
  • DS went thru a period from about 4-9 weeks where he only pooped once every 2-5 days. This past week he's been pooping more like 1-2 times per day. It is super annoying because we're using up our last box of size 1 diapers before switching to size 2 and they happen to be Huggies. DS has pooped out of every single Huggies diaper he's ever pooped in, so we've been doing a few extra clothes changes each day.

I noticed DS has scratched himself a few times in the past couple of days, but I probably just need to trim his nails. I hate when they scratch themselves too!
  • LO poops multiple times a day and still scratches his face. We put the mittens on at night and take them off during awake time.
  • Both of my boys are prolific poopers, but MIL worked with babies and has often said they didn't think anything of it until the 11th day of no poop for EBF babies. With the scratching... Yeah. J was worse than E, but E scratches a bit, too. We use a nail file to keep the baby nails under control. Nail clippers freak me out for some reason.

  • My LO is 2 months old. He is pooping less but still 1-2 times a day. He has also recently discovered his hands and has suffered a few tiny scratches now that he's constantly moving them.
  • LO is on breastmilk and is pooping less but still daily. I've noticed this week (11 weeks) that he's only pooping about 3x a day versus 6.

And little man is constantly scratching his face. I'm too scared to cut his nails so I file them but I swear the next day they're razor sharp again. I prayed all week that he wouldn't scratch himself so he'd look nice for today's baby dedication. He did great all week long and today at the get together afterwards he scratched his face... Twice. Sigh.

  • DS has been an every 2-3 day pooper since he was about 2 weeks old.
As for the nails, I wait till he's milk drunk and trim as close as i possibly can. I'm not as worried about him scratching himself as I am about him latching onto my nipple with those little claws. That shit hurts.
