Frickin ridiculous (rant)

My mom was from Lebanon, raised here, and extremely Americanized. Her family however, not so much...I called my Aunt to let her know we were having a girl and she said "Oh. (Long pause.) Are you sure?" "Yep, we're sure." "Oh. Well that's ok, you'll try again and have a boy." Seriously!? WTF!!! Who says that shit!? I get that their culture celebrates giving a man a son, but since when is a girl considered an unfortunate circumstance!?! She said it like I was just given a cancer diagnosis or something! "Oh, it'll be ok..."
No shit!!!?!
I'm pissed...DH says "calm down, they'll feel differently when they meet her," but I'm still annoyed. She should've kept that shit to herself, said "congrats," and moved on.

  • Wow, talk about cultural differences! Try to forget her reaction and focus on all of the cute hair flair that you get to buy for your little girl. :)

  • Ok there should be disclaimers in front of all most all "Arab opinions" that say please keep in mind we mean well and want the best for you but don't know how to say it the right way ! I know bc I'm Syrian and they say the CRAZIEST things. Like if you are gaining weight they immediately let you know, if you lose weight you must not be eating enough. And the boy thing is super backwards. It's mostly the women that feel that way too( which is funny). My dad was wishing this little one was another girl but my Aunt was like ,
"Oh Thanks God you having a boy!"
Keep in mind it's not malicious. They really do want the best for you - and in their bazaar World they think they are helping.

That being said, a little baby girl is gonna make you the happiest mommy on the planet and your will adore every second !!!
  • @sheesha, I know what you're saying, (the weight issue is a good example,) but the baby thing threw me for a loop! It's not what you say, but how you say it, and I think it was just the sound of disappointment in her voice that really struck the wrong cord with me...I didn't think she was intentionally trying to be malicious, but I can't deny that it was still hurtful :(
  • @farmboyswife, I wasn't intentionally trying to blow it up, just really bummed at her reaction :( I'm a softie, so it was hurtful to hear from someone I love, ya know?? I'll put the big girl panties on now, just felt good to vent...
  • I'm so thrilled to be having a girl, and that no one will give us a hard time about it. Her comment makes me kind of sad for her, since she is a woman! A little value would be nice!

I totally understand!! And you are definitely validated in feeling that way. I am super desensitized to their craziness. But I'm glad that you are smart enough to know she is being ridiculous.
