Dressing for cold

This is definitely a silly FTM question but one I've just never had to think about! This will be our first winter up north and I'm unsure how to dress them on the really cold/snowy days. Obviously we have winter jackets/hats/mittens ready to go but will they need those one piece snow suits and boots too?? I picked up a couple at old navy but then was thinking....do I really need these for errands?! Are regular sneakers ok to go out and about or do we need some sort of warm boot? I haven't really seen anything yet in the stores so was just kinda perplexed. Veteran cold weather moms.....how did you dress your lo's on those real cold days?

I am also mobile bumping an can not see your siggy but I live up near the Canadian boarder and we get some very cold winters! We use boots all winter long because the slush and ice soaks regular shoes. The one piece snow suits are not recommended if the child is in a car seat because if you were to get into even a minor crash those snow suits (even winter coats) will compress more than you think and suddenly the car seat straps are no longer fitting properly and can cause serious injury if the child slips out of the loose fitting straps (hope that makes sense it's hard to describe in text on my phone I feel like) I always heat my car up put him in the coat take them to the warm car then take the jacket off to strap them in its a pain but I would rather those straps fit tight to the body and take a few moments doing so than the alternative. Also long underwear is nice to have depending how cold it is. We just toss those on under jeans and also have a few flannel lined jeans (we found those at 'the children's place') if we are going out and about to do shopping etc instead if snowpants. My twins will be born in December but I have a almost 4 year old so we have done the winter season a few times :)

  • Layers!!! Fleece or flannel lined jeans will be your best friend. Honestly my whole family owns at least two pairs. Wool socks and a pair of boots are also a must. Sneakers are not going to cut it through slush and puddles. Especially with one year olds that stomp their feet!  I would also avoid heavy jackets in the car. PP stated the reasons for this. We also have a blanket for each kid to use while the van is heating up.
  • Definitely a no to the snow suits for errands because of the car seat concerns mentioned above! You can do a fleece jacket, mittens, hat, boots to keep all the extremities warm and if you think you need to add a fleece car seat poncho once they are strapped in. Here is a DIY version! https://www.newlywednewlybred.com/2011/11/no-sew-fleece-car-seat-poncho.html
