PRK eye surgery

Anyone had PRK? I'm not a candidate for LASIK so this is my only option. The d kinda brushed me off about the differences, but the paperwork talks of a 3-6 month recovery period! Ain't nobody got time for that! DH had LASIK and was 90% after 1 week. How long was your PRK recovery? Was it super painful? Would you do it again knowing what you know now?

I have terrible vision and would love to see which kid walks in the room at night or read an alarm clock!

Re: PRK eye surgery

  • My husband had PRK.  He was in severe pain from the procedure for about 3 days but after that period of time he was fine.  The Dr. said that he was one of the minority that had such pain from it.  He says that he would do it all over again though, as his vision is awesome now.  It was well worth it.  You may be "recovering" for 3 - 6 months, but it's just the cells healing and you are not aware of that.  You may be out of commission for 3 - 7 days, but after a week you should be pretty well back to normal.

I didn't have prk surgery, but I had ICL surgery, which is where they implant a collamer lens in your eyes to correct vision (similar to cataract surgery, except I kept my original lenses.)  I think it's a less common, more expensive, and more invasive surgery than the ones that use lasers, but I got it through the Army who covered the costs for me.  My understanding is that the main types of corrective vision surgery are Lasik, Lasek, PRK, and ICL.  Your doctor might just offer Lasik or Prk, but they may not be your only options.

That said, I knew a lot of soldiers who got the prk surgery because the army won't do a surgery that requires a flap, and I don't think their recovery was particularly long.  (We all ended up getting corrective vision surgery at the same time so our eyes could recover before our deployment, and we wouldn't have to bring contacts to Afghanistan.)  I think the first week or so is when you're really uncomfortable and taking some pain meds, but after that it was mainly wearing sunglasses and being careful with light.

ETA: The army gives you 4 days to recover from the surgery before you're back at work, so the worst of it is over by then.
