NBR- Wedding Reception Songs

As I'm in process of putting finishing touches on our wedding reception, I'm at a loss for some music choices! :) I figured there was no one better to ask than you ladies!

Did you have an entrance song for you and the wedding party? If so, what was it? If not, was there a reason?
What was your first dance song?
What was your father/daughter dance song?
Groom/mother song?
Garter/bouquet toss song?

Anything I'm missing? I'd rather hear from you all than venture over to TK!

Ladies who aren't married, do you have any songs that you just love and remind you of your SO? I love music and know I'm missing out on some great songs!

Did you have an entrance song for you and the wedding party? If so, what was it? If not, was there a reason?

I can't for the life of me think of what song we used, but it was a really fun, upbeat song.

What was your first dance song?

"Only You Can Love Me This Way" by Keith Urban

What was your father/daughter dance song?

"I Loved Her First" by Heartland

    Groom/mother song?

I don't remember, some really cheesy song that apparently is the only one that a lot of people use...it was terrible.

    Garter/bouquet toss song?

"Single Ladies" by Beyonce for the bouquet toss
"Legs" by ZZ Top for the garter toss

Cake Cutting Song (just in case you want suggestions)

    "Sugar, Sugar" by The Archies

eta: We also did an Anniversary Song and used "Remember When" by Alan Jackson

  • Not what you asked but Weddingwire.com was a huge help in finding songs for me. It's broken down into categories so really easy to find an appropriate song for each thing.

Did you have an entrance song for you and the wedding party? If so, what was it? If not, was there a reason?
We all entered to Bruno Mars "Marry You" it was right when that song came out.
What was your first dance song?
Right after we entered we did our first dance which was Matt Wertz "I Will Not Take My love Away" (I was my choice because it's almost exactly 2 minutes. Nothing is worse than being at a wedding and every "dance song" the invitees don't participate in is 5 minutes long.)
We also did a couples dance song to our real first song Wonderwall by oasis. (so everyone there got to dance as a couple right away which was really fun, I danced with a ring bear)
What was your father/daughter dance song?
Michael buble "the way you look tonight" my dad also chose.
    Groom/mother song?
It was a Carly Simon song. That was like 6 minutes long. I told the Dj to cut it off after like 2. It was cheesy and lame.
    Garter/bouquet toss song?
There was not a specific song for that. At the point the party was going so it was just on for background.

When we went out to cut the cake the song the way you make me feel Michael Jackson played(I actually considered that my song with the dog, when he was a little puppy we used to dance to it together).

I also chose songs for the precessional, and when we left the ceremony. None of the traditional stuff. I think whatever you do at a wedding to make it you, super personal, rather than what other do at a wedding makes it so nice. My friends did a "memory box" in the ceremony where they brought some of their favorite memories from the relationship and locked them in a box (we didn't see what they were, it was a special moment for them, I'll never forget that I thought it was really sweet). I think the more personal it is to you guys the better. You remember all the details of your wedding. Most guests don't.

    Eta: spelling. Stupid iPhone.
  • Did you have an entrance song for you and the wedding party? If so, what was it? Ours was In Your Honor by the Foo Fighters. It's definitely not traditional, but starts out low and picks up perfectly/gets loud.

What was your first dance song? Everlong by the Foo Fighters ( acoustic version)

What was your father/daughter dance song? Butterfly Kisses (danced to the same song at my sweet 16 with my dad)

Groom/mother song? In My Life by the Beatles (dh danced with his aunt as he has no relationship with his mom)

Garter/bouquet toss song? Can't remember. Single ladies?

Anything I'm missing? We had the song "save the last dance" as the last song at the reception

  • We had a destination wedding so we didn't do most of the traditional songs. I walked down the aisle to "This Years Love" by David Grey. At the end, we exited to "I Believe" by Stevie Wonder. :)
  • @suchgreatheights324 So random, but dh knowing (or actually googling) the song lyrics I posted from Such Great Heights is part of the reason I decided to give him a chance over 8 years ago, lol. Love that song!
    image
  • Entrance for bridal party: "Can't help falling in love" Elvis Traditional march for my walk. Exit: "Soul Meets Body" Deathcab For Cutie First Dance: "Such Great Heights" Iron & Wine Daddy/Daughter: "Butterfly Kisses" Bob Carlisle.

@suchgreatheights324 Have you heard the Ben Folds cover of "Such Great Heights" - it was done with a bunch of improvised instruments. It's pretty cool. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NmLTlV5Cc9k
Love it! I've always been a Ben Folds fan.
Love Ben Folds! Which also made me remember that our first dance was to Ben Folds "The Luckiest"!
  • @Maritza707 MH and I had just started dating when he pulled over on an old country road and turned on the version by Iron & Wine. He turned to me and said, "I hope you don't think this is cheesy, but I think of you every time I hear this song. I think I love you." I still give him hell about the "think" part, but it was very sweet.
Lol, the first time DH told me, he said "I think I love you" too.  But that was okay, because I didn't say it back to him for two more weeks.

Awww! That's too cute! Dh told me at a Foo Fighters show when they played an acoustic version of Everlong. It was our first concert together. He couldn't get the words out at first since he has a slight stutter when he's nervous. :)

I love Weddings! Although I didn't enjoy planning ours. It made me rethink my once "maybe I should be a wedding planner" thought.

Did you have an entrance song for you and the wedding party? If so, what was it? If not, was there a reason?

We did not have an entrance song for our wedding party. We had a big bridal party and we thought it would take too much time. Plus, DH thinks it is cheesy. However, our bridal party released confetti as DH and I were introduced.

And when we were introduced, "Don't Stop Believing" played. We love 80's music and this is one of our shared songs.

What was your first dance song?

"With or Without You" by U2. Again, because we love the 80's and this was the first song we ever danced to together.

What was your father/daughter dance song?

Carol King "Child of Mine." My father chose that song.

    Groom/mother song?

"Lean on Me." My husband was born and raised outside of Detroit. He and his mom love Motown!

    Garter/bouquet toss song?

I don't remember the song that was playing during the garter toss. But "Single Ladies" was playing during the bouquet toss.

  • I had a special father/daughter dance song. When we were little, my dad used to play "Puff the Magic Dragon" on his guitar and sing it for us. But since it has a depressing ending, he made up another happy verse for the end. For our dance at my wedding, I found a local musician to record the song with my dad's special verse included. It was a surprise, and he really loved it. And, ha ha, our entrance music was "You're the Best Around" from the Karate Kid tournament scene, because my DH and I are geeks like that.

Exit: all you need is love
Reception entrance: you are the best thing ray lamontagne

Mother/son + father/daughter (we combined it): my wish rascal flatts

First dance: better together jack Johnson

Song I wish we had used somewhere: forever my friend ray lamontagne. Love, love it.
  • I've always thought " Another one bites the dust" would be an awesome song to walk into the reception! Edwin McCain's "I could not ask for more" screams love to me. Congrats BTW!
  • Did you have an entrance song for you and the wedding party? If so, what was it? If not, was there a reason?
I can't remember mine, I think it was maybe something from a Jock Jams cd, since I got married in Chicago, it was likely related to the Blues Brothers or the song used at Bulls games at that time. But, I do remember my cousin's because both she and her husband are teachers, "Hot for Teacher" by Van Halen

What was your first dance song?
"In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel

What was your father/daughter dance song?
"The Way You Look Tonight" by Frank Sinatra

    Groom/mother song?
"I Hope You Dance" by Lee Ann Womack

    Garter/bouquet toss song?
"Girls Just Want to Have Fun" by Cyndi Lauper

Just to give you perspective, I got married 10 years ago, so these songs are rather dated, but I'd play them again if I got married now, maybe change 1 or 2.
  • The laptop that had all our music on it died the night before the wedding so DH asked BIL to bring his laptop with 2 specific song requests and after that just anything appropriate.

Our first dance song was Love Song by 311 (cover of The Cure version)

And I asked for Butterfly Kisses for my daddy/daughter dance but apparently there are a jillion versions and when BIL asked which one I didn't know what to say so I told him to just pick one. It was definitely the wrong one.

Other than that we really didn't have any specific music because of the stupid dead laptop.

  • Entrance: whatever the Dj picked. I'm missing the girl gene that makes me care about wedding details, so I told him as long as it wasn't disco or country it was fine.

First dance: "all the way" by frank Sinatra

    Dad/daughter "I wish you peace"

    Mom/groom: "moon river".

If I could go back in time I would have eloped. It was a fun night, but it was so much planning for one day. And like I said, I'm missing the "weddings! Squeeeeeeee!" Gene. ;)

@BlueJewelIM - Yeah I'm right there with you. We did the destination thing and basically didn't plan anything until we got to the resort - 3 days before the wedding. We didn't have a wedding party and we didn't do any of the traditional things because all we wanted were friends, drinks, and dancing. We had all of the above. :-) The only reason I "squee!" at weddings is because I freaking LOVE cake.
