Dr Browns Premie vs Level 1 nipples

I'm trying to get a feel for what's best for my baby. He likes the Dr. Browns bottle, but I do think the level 1 nipple is just slightly too fast for him even though he's 5 1/2 weeks. He guzzles it down and gets really fussy after only 3 oz even when he gets burped a few times while taking the bottle. Doesn't seem optimal for him and mimic (as close as possible) to my flow during breastfeeding. Anyone out there go backwards to a slow flow/premie even though the baby is at least a month ago? TIA!

Re: Dr Browns Premie vs Level 1 nipples

  • I am not switching nipples at all. I'm sticking with the low flow level the entire time. It best mimics BF. I would just go with what nipple your baby likes the best.

  • You can definitely switch back- I did with my DD. She never got frustrated with the slower nipple. I've heard the Preemie nipples are better for 0-3m anyway. DD is 12 weeks on Friday and we just switched her back to the Level 1 and she's not choking anymore.

  • I had the same issue with the level 1. we switched our son to the preemies at 4 weeks and it helped tremendously with the spit up and gas issues. The preemie nipples are even in a little fast in my opinion. I think that's just Dr. Brown's brand though. My son didn't have any issues with the switch to the slower flow.
  • the nurse at the breastfeeding clinic told me not to cradle my baby in my arms while drinking from a bottle. she suggested having her in a sitting position on my lap supported by my body and my one arm, and to lean her forward and let the formula/milk leave the nipple every once in a while to slow her down, it has helped tremendously with the spit up. She was drinking her bottle so quickly and this has definitely helped.
  • We switched back to preemies. Emma was drinking way too fast and would drool out half the bottle with the level ones. She has had no issues with the preemies. We did it when she was about 3 weeks.
