The 5 month wakeful?

Is there such a thing? DS has always been a good sleeper but when he was about 4 months we had a few rough nites because he was constantly startling himself and moving around. Enter the merlin sleep suit and within one night we were back to 10hr stretches every night.

A few nights ago he started waking up every hour, and it takes sometimes 1/2hr or longer to get him back down. Twice I've given up at 3am and held him for the rest of the night which is usually only another hour or two until he wakes up for the day. 4 out of 5 days this week have been like that with one random night where he slept 10hrs.

Again tonite, I put him down at 7:45, up at 8:15 and wanted to finish his bottle. Up again at 9:45, I just got him back down at 10:15 but I'm not feeling confident he'll last long. He is constantly moving now, even in the sleep suit. I was holding him and he kept twitching different body parts. What the hell is this? They've also been having some trouble with his naps at daycare, taking longer to get him to sleep and they have to stick to a routine to get him down. I'm desperate for sleep, DH and I are doing shifts tonite so that we can at least each get some consecutive sleep but somethings got to give. I'm not even sure sleep training applies here since its all about his moving constantly and waking himself up. Advice? Is this just another phase? A wonder week maybe?

We have a babysitter lined up for tmrw night so we can go out to dinner for our anniversary but now I feel guilty leaving this poor women with DS who will no doubt be waking up the whole time.

I swear DS had a 5 month wakeful period, but not the 4 month one. We've had similar issues - he was sleeping great and then it deteriorated, and he started staying asleep later and later and waking more frequently at night. A few days ago, he decided he was a side-sleeper, and things have started to get back to normal (definitely not there yet, but starting.) It's just another phase I guess - this too shall pass. Hang in there.

I think with baby sleep...there is no rhyme or reason to it. As they become more aware of the world, they wake up more. When object permanence sets in, they wake up more. Teething, sickness, ear infections...etc...they wake up more. I wish there were always a simple answer and solution to baby sleep but I think you have to roll with it until they get older and hopefully things work themselves out.

Our LO's wakeful period was about a week shy of his 5 month bday. Got bad and he ended up moving into our bed for the next 6 weeks. We just started Ferberizing him last night, at 6 months and a week. Moved him to his own room and crib. Heartbreaking, but necessary. He cried for 36 minutes then fell asleep for 4 hours, woke up at 2 am and cried for 45 minutes and slept til 7. Had breakfast and now a nap at 8:30 with only a minute or two of crying.

I think there's definately a possibility it's a wonder week, based on his due date he's almost 24 weeks and I've noticed he's doing many new things this week. We actually had a good night last night, put him to bed 1/2hr earlier because he was exhausted and he slept 11hrs straight, we'll see how tonight goes!
