I will also be checking with the nurses and doc before we are discharged. But wondering for those with stitches from tears or episiotomys what are you taking/doing for pain management that won't interfere with nursing/milk. Currently all I've been allowed is Motrin or regular Tylonal, and neither is hardly touching the pain I'm in.
Vicodin or Lortab (same ingredients just different strengths) is what I had for pain after DD. my pain was really bad after her delivery. Ibuprofen is what I stepped down to after a few days. If ibuprofen or Tylenol isn't touching your pain you should request something stronger. You do not want to go home with uncontrolled pain!!
I had no tearing but my body was incredibly sore (mostly my lower back and sciatic pain) and I was given Motrin and Percocet in the hospital and sent home with Motrin and lortab. I can't imagine going without narcotics! I only pushed for 2-3 minutes but my body was just SOOO sore.
I remember getting Rx Motrin in the hospital for DD, but nothing to take home with me; just to use regular Advil. Did you grab a stack of the cold pads along with a can of the spray? That worked better for me than drugs (I tore and had a couple stitches).
I'm scheduled for a C-section this time around, so I'm curious as to what drugs I'll be getting this time.
m/c 9/22/07 at 8w5d...BFP 12/23/07! DD born 9/4/2008,

I was told 800mg of ibuprofen with DS. As long as I stayed on top of taking it I was okay. If I missed a dose or waited too long it didn't work well. I'm expecting the same thing this time.
Ibuprofen and norco with the previous baby, but the norcos don't stay in my system for very long. I'm going to remember to tell them to prescribe something else this time.
Crunchy vote checking in - For my 2nd degree tear and grape-sized hemorrhoids (seriously, ow) I've been using a comfrey poultice 3 times a day; just dried comfrey leaves (available at health food stores or Amazon as a loose tea) wrapped in gauze dampened and wrung out tightly. Place it on your nethers for a few hours and walla - pain relieved and healing promoted. They shrunk my hemorrhoids almost overnight. It's done so much more for my pain and discomfort than any of the pharmaceuticals I tried.
For the soreness and cramps I used Motrin for a couple of days.
Something I noticed from my last BMB, and I experienced as well. Once I was home I was using my regular pads (always ultrathins). They were causing me a lot of discomfort. Felt like I was being rubbed raw by them. Based in a suggestion from several ladies who had similar issues I switched to the always Infiniti. Within 24 hours things felt so much better and that raw feeling was gone.
Plus I used tucks pads for both my rhoids and vag.
I didn't tear, but I found that my spinal/epidural lasted quite a while into recovery, which was nice. I could walk and everything, but my pain perception remained lower. I took the Advil and turned down the Percocet, but that was the combo I was told I could have.
Motrin all the way. I actually have felt good enough on it that I forget to take the next dose and then I am really sore and crampy in my lower back & pelvis. Stitches are another story (2nd degree tear) but the 1% hydrocortisone does help. I keep using the witch hazel too but am less convinced it does anything.

That's good to know about the Always Infiniti. I was using a different Always pad after I had DD1 and it really irritated me.
I had a 4th degree episiotomy so needless to say the first 5 days were hell. The pain, bleeding and combined constipation were brutal. They had me on Motrin and Vicodin. I met with a Lactation consultant yesterday and she said that that is why they choose those pain management options because they are the best for still breastfeeding or pumping. She just told me to do my best to take the pills right after feeding or pumping so as little as possible is in your system. She said it was more important to take care of momma than to not breast feed or pump.
lortab and ibuprofen 600, I haven't been taking the lortab but have the ibuprofen every once in a while. I had a 3rd degree tear and some days it hurts more than others
With my c/s: Oxycodone and Motrin. With my VBAC: Norco and Motrin. But I really one used the stronger meds the day after birth and then used Motrin from then on.
i turned down percocet the first night after delivery, and quickly changed my mind. the cramping (for me) was almost unbearable after the epi wore off. i think i just did motrin when I got home though.
The hospital sent me home with ice pads that really helped. They also showed me how to make ice diapers. I'm sure you could google it. Other than that, they ibuprofen and Tylenol made it manageable.
Thanks for all your responses. Turns out I was under dosing myself with the Motrin and Regular Tylenol. I guess I didn't read the instructions properly and upon further review of all my papers came across this, now that I'm a bit more awake and kinda with it. Dr sent me home with a Rx for T2's per my request for something stronger and I've been making "Padcicles". Feeling more relief now. Going to see how the days go and ween myself to just Motrin and Tylenol. Love the spray bottle I came home with too. I think tomorrow will be a much better day.
Re: Pain relief after giving birth
ETA: Whoops, I was wrong! It was Norco.

After almost 3 years of IF and a crazy roadside delivery, we are loving life with our second beautiful daughter!
With my VBAC: Norco and Motrin.
