Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Sleep Training/Non Training/Whatever

Talk to me about sleep training because I cannot for the life of me remember what we did with my first! Ginny (who is just over 6 months) STTN from about 2 months old until a few weeks ago, so I know she doesn't need to eat overnight. When I put her down around 7:30pm, I nurse her and lay her down awake and she goes to sleep just fine (sometimes she needs a little back patting or a snuggle, but its not an issue). The problem is that she's been getting up at 10:30pm and 2:30am on. the. dot. every single night.

If I walk in there, she flips out and starts the "mamamamamama" cry. If DH goes in, he can usually get her rocked back to sleep in about 10 minutes. I'm not totally opposed to CIO, but from what I've seen of her, she just doesn't know how to calm herself down very well. :-/ Any advice?

Re: Sleep Training/Non Training/Whatever

  • This was DD up until a week ago. I was nursing her back to sleep which wasn't helping matters. So I did timed checks when she woke up and 15 mins later she was back asleep. I still nurse if it's been 4hrs though only because she is too distracted during the day to eat well. I just got a 7 hr stretch last night - the first one in over 2 months! And I only had to do timed checks twice this week because she either put herself back to sleep or slept at least 4 hrs. I guess waking every 2-3 hrs was a habit for her but we were able to get back on track. Hoping it sticks...

Will got more upset if either my husband or I would go in his room to try to get him back to sleep. During his sleep regression phase, his first wake up would be around 12:30 then every 1-2 hours after that. He was a little young (for some peoples standards) to start CIO, but by his pedis suggestion we tried it after 2 weeks of horrible sleep. He did not know how to calm himself either. Night 1 was rough (45 min on and off crying) 15-20 minutes each time he would wake up MOTN. After that night it was like a switch clicked. Night 2 was 10 min crying and a little whimpering in MOTN. Now he will talk and squirm and play with his nuk or lovey until he falls asleep. He rarely cries when being out down for nap or bed. Also, I should note that the video monitor was a lifesaver for CIO and that if he wakes up after 8+ hours of sleeping I give him a bottle because I can usually tell he's hungry at this point. Usually sleeps from 7/7:30pm-6:30/7:30am with one wake time for a bottle around 430/530 am. I give him his bottle, put him back in his crib and he either will fall right back to sleep or talk for about 5 minutes and then fall back to sleep.

There is a growth spurt at 6 months so she could legitimately be hungry, and there is also a wonder week at 26ish weeks. We just got over that one and it suuuucked. But, it's over, lol. I either fed him or rocked him when he woke. He's back to sleeping like normal.

I took more notice today and realized she's been a pretty distracted eater. At daycare, however, she gets bottles so I know she's eating a certain amount. Why are babies so confusing!

    Also, @MrsWindyCity, what's a wonder week?

ETA: I looked it up and I'm not even kidding - the description of the week 26 WW is EXACTLY what has been going on. Like, creepy to a T. Interesting......

  • Yeah, we discovered the wonder weeks with DS1. I swear, every time he was really fussy or had crappy sleep, I'd look and see he was in the middle of a WW. Crazy how those things can be so accurate! The 26w was the worst for us so far with DS2, who is normally both a very happy baby and a good night sleeper. It lasted about 2 weeks, but everything went back to normal. Good luck!
  • The Sleep Whisperer Solves All Your Problems recommends doing "wake to sleep." The idea is that because baby is waking out of habit, you rouse her about an hour before she usually wakes up so that she is at a different point in her sleep cycle at the time she usually wakes up. It actually worked for DD. I didn't have to wake her up completely, just enough for her to move a bit/make a little bit of noise and fall back asleep on her own. However, DS is a whole different ball game. Nothing gets him to sleep all night...

  • Babies needs change greatly through different periods.  Just because baby didn't need food a few months ago doesn't mean baby doesn't need food now.  Growth spurts change things, teething change things...all sorts of reasons for a baby to change the night routine on you.

My 7 month old is near impossible to feed when out of the house these days as she wants to see everything.  Naturally she now needs to eat more at night to compensate for less food during the day.
