WWYD - re: babysitter and is this a big deal?

ok so I had a super long day today and just got home at like 7:45 tonight. Our babysitter (who I like but I'm not crazy about her or anything) was here at 10:30 this morning and when she arrived I was in the backyard but our new employee (K) was inside with Ava (who was in her highchair). K came outside and told me the babysitter (L) had arrived and when K got up to leave Ava burst into tears. L made some remark about how that was depressing. So K and I loaded the vehicle with animals and I ran back in the house to talk to L real quick. They were in Ava's room and I could hear Ava crying still. When I went in her room Ava was in hysterics - bright red face, huge crocodile tears, the whole shebang. My heart broke as she reached frantically for me and I couldn't resist grabbing her for a hug. She normally cries a bit when I leave her with L but not like this. I could hear her wailing as I closed her door and hurried out of the house and I felt SO bad. My first thought was "is this a red flag? has something happened and Ava doesn't like L now?".

We were late getting back tonight but I had texted L earlier to let her know and I asked her to feed Ava dinner. When we got back, her boyfriend was parked in the driveway taking up more than half of it so I had trouble backing the vehicle into the spot but whatever. He was just waiting in the car for her. Then I saw Ava standing at the front door (it's all glass) by herself. I went in and L appeared from the living room. I have previously told her that I don't want Ava playing in the living room as it's not baby proofed and we just don't ever let her play in there. However there were some of her toys strewn about on the living room floor and the fact that they were in there tells me they were playing in there. Not a huge deal...but still.

So then Ava is screaming again. Her eyes were red and puffy and she was just so unhappy. Apparently she had a 2 hour nap which was great but L said she did not eat much and shoved everything away, eating only about half of what she was offered throughout the day. And my kid LOVES to eat. So that was odd. L then practically bolted from the house, even though our normal routine is that she stays until I get all the animals put away. Nope, she rushed off. And I paid her extra too. So then I had to put some of the animals away with Ava glued to my hip, finally I passed her over to K so I could have 2 free hands as she is not comfortable handling all the animals yet. Ava was completely fine with her, no tears at all, even when I left the room.

Am I overreacting here, or do you think that the strange vibe I'm getting might be legit? I feel like this is much more than Ava just being clingy but then I could be totally wrong. Ugh.

Also because our babysitter has another part time job (at a gas station), her boss doesn't put the schedule out until Wednesday for the following week that starts on Friday. We need her both Friday night and all day Saturday next week and she won't know until Wednesday if she can do them! I'm freaking out cause we can't wait that long. She made some comment to me though that if she couldn't babysit then her boyfriend could look after Ava and he was great with kids. I told my H and right away he was like "um...NO"  I think it's time to get a new sitter... like ASAP.

  • Ok thank you. I'm glad I'm not just overreacting! Usually my intuition is pretty good. I felt awful all day that Ava was so miserable at home :(
  • I would get a new sitter. Something isn't right.

  • It's been said already, but my two cents as a daycare teacher/nanny for many years- fire her for sure.

  • Get rid of her. Mother's intuition wins.

  • Set up a nanny cam or get rid of her.  Don't do nothing.  If you fire her and it turns out she wasn't a terrible human being then good, but what if she is? also you said you don't love her.  None of my business so I am sorry if this is rude, but I would never leave my child with anyone I didn't love and think was doing an exceptional job.

  • Honestly, the crying would not bother me.  My LO went through a seperation anxiety phase about 2 months ago.  Drop offs at DC were horrible and she would scream/cry.  It was the same class with the same teachers and most of the same kids.  For some reason she just did not want us to leave her.   The teachers were really good about taking her from us and trying to distract her.  After about 3 weeks it magically went away so it must have been a phase she went through.
The things that would bother me are playing in the unsafe living room, having the BF waiting for her, and rushing off.  If you feel that something is not right then go with your gut and get rid of her.  It is better for your peace of mind and Ava to have someone you trust around her.

Yep we're done, she will never be looking after Ava again. I never found anything wrong with her before and she seemed to really love Ava. She just seemed a little shy around me so trying to talk with her was a bit awkward at times, which is why I said I didn't love her.
  • I'd let her go for several reasons. First, she's not following your instructions by letting Ava play somewhere that isn't safe. Whether she's supervised or not, you asked her not to do it and she did.
Second, you need a reliable sitter. Not a "maybe, we'll see" sitter. Third, your kid doesn't like her. Hayden suddenly started freaking out when I left him a daycare. Come to find out, the new teacher was falling asleep in the chair and pretty much neglecting the kids. She was fired after a week because Hayden wasn't the only kid that was freaking out. They watched the cameras and let her go after seeing how she was.

  • Thanks everyone! So I signed up with Care.com and already found several great sounding prospects! I'm doing interviews all afternoon tomorrow so hopefully we find someone fantastic :)
