Stupid Sleeping Question

As our babies start to sleep less and less during the day, I find myself growing worried when my DS sleeps a lot more than normal. I know he typically sleeps more right after a growth spurt and he just went through his six week one. Question being, is there a point where you would be worried about your baby sleeping too much? He's giving me no reason to think he's sick, just groggy and sleepy. Sorry for the dumb question, but I always get anxious when he has really sleepy days even though I know I should be enjoying it! Thanks!

Re: Stupid Sleeping Question

  • Some days they are more tired then other days. Its normal.

  • It's always been conveyed to me that you start to worry when you can't wake them to eat.  Otherwise, they're probably extra sleepy for some reason (growth spurt, etc)

  • I will never, ever worry that my baby is sleeping too much, even if she sleeps 12 hours without eating. Babies wake up when they need to eat and such. As long as they are eating enough when awake, you are golden.

  • As long as they are eating enough let them sleep! Not all your days will end up being like that. For what it's worth DD IS 9 weeks and she can't stay up for much more than an hour before she becomes overtired.
  • DS is extra sleepy and tired today because he had his 2 month shots today. Poor thing didn't even want to eat.

@haneybaby, I know what you mean.  My DD is the same way; she's 7 wks today.  She wakes around 6:30-7, gives us a good 30-45 min awake and then sleeps the rest of the morning until 12-1, only waking to eat.  She maybe has 3 1 hr intervals where she's awake and active in the afternoon and we try to capitalize on those times and interact with her.  Then she gets overtired and wants to go back to sleep.  Bedtime is at 9-10.

I thought about calling the pedi but, she doesn't have a fever, she wakes to feed and gives us a good amount of wet/dirty diapers.  She makes eye contact with us and has started social smiling so they wouldn't do anything.  I think I'll bring it up at her 2 mo visit but I'm not going to go out of my way to call them.

ETA: It's more than just a "wow, she slept alot today.  she's groggy."  It's everyday.

  • Thank you everyone!
  • I did at first, worry about her sleeping too much but my mom said get rest while you can.. She has a good point. Plus LO wants to eat and is gaining well so no worries there.
  • I too worried that my LO was sleeping too much. Then he started to change his schedule, sleeping more during the night (of course he is not sleeping through the night yet) and staying awake more during the day. However, everyday is different. I think they develop a schedule overtime.

Like other pp's said, if he is waking to feed, doesn't have a temp, is gaining weight, and making the average number of pee/poop diapers, you are good to go.
