Honestly it's not even that uncommon...we have providers where I work that let dads "catch" the baby all the time.

I didn't read the while thing, but it sounds more like she wanted him to do the delivery.

I caught my own baby, but I wouldn't consider that delivering her.

I've seen (saw? Sorry I'm Appalachian) an EMT dad deliver his baby, nuchal cord and all. the doctor was there to tell him what to do.
