Babies: 0 - 3 Months

cartoons for baby

We've noticed our almost 3mo old is starting to look at the tv and if we hold the ipad in front of him he will watch it and act excited. I'm thinking about downloading some Baby Einstein-ish cartoons for him for a road trip coming up in November. We have a case for the ipad that attaches to the back of the headrest and one of us will be sitting in the back with him. Any parents have success with cartoons in the car (or at home)? If so, which cartoons?

  • I used a baby einstein when my son was about 9 months. I would put him in his exersaucer and put on the DVD while I showered. That's all he watched until he was probably a year and a half.

I'd hold off on the cartoons/TV as an "activity" as long as you can (3 months seems pretty young).  But, I too, am not in the camp that all TV is bad so maybe bring some Baby Einstein DVDs as a backup plan for your trip (i.e., if your LO starts to have a meltdown in the car), but I wouldn't make it part of his regular routine at home.

DS is 18 months and we've had the TV on around him since he was born, but it's only been in the past few months that he actually seems to be paying attention to it.  I don't mind if he periodically sits and watches something but when I see him start to get that hypnosis look, I try to distract him with a different activity.  Ironically, when I'd actually like him to sit for about 15 minutes and watch something while I get something done, he shows no interest!

  • She said for a road trip, not that she'd be sitting her baby in front of the tv all day , some rude responses
  • OP, buying videos for a 3 month old is unnecessary. Bring toys, stop often to stretch, change and feed baby, and you'll be fine. Don't just plop an electronic in front of the baby to distract them.

@NKF312... Grow up, no one was rude. You're confusing "rude" with honest. It's okay, it happens a lot on tb.
  • @BettyandCo I'm sorry, didn't realize it's completely "honest" to not help a new mom with giving an actual answer instead Thanks for teaching me wise one

Honest question, what, exactly is a 3 month old normally doing outside the car that they can't do INSIDE the car.  People overestimate a baby's ability to be bored.  Their whole world is brand new so everything is interesting to them.  Babies like to be talked to (someone sitting in the back can do that), have a toy shaken in front of them (again, person in the back), have someone play peekaboo or sing (person.in.the.back.)

Um, she did actually ask about at home: "Any parents have success with cartoons in the car (or at home)?"

I think she was offered plenty of good advice.

  • FYI I'm not planning on sitting my baby in front of the tv at home. I know lots of parents that play video's in the car for their babies/kids. I'm not worried about him being over stimulated. He doesn't live in a world void of sound, color and light. He's in daycare 5 days a week, he can definitely handle 30 minutes of the ipad in the car. We're going to be in the car for 4 hours and my kid is going to get tired of looking at me shaking toys in front of him! haha.

-He doesn't like his car seat to begin with much less sitting still anywhere for more than 30 minutes.

Oh good lord. Panties in a bunch for no reason. Why don't YOU give the OP some advice then?

If I had advice I'd give it, a few people did actually give advice, which is great. My point is people come here as new parents for actual advice, not to be scoffed at.

I genuinely do not feel that a 3 mo old can get "bored," especially in a car, there's tons of new things to see out the window. Their little minds are processing & learning so much, even when they're just sitting, staring at nothing. I'd suggest holding off on the videos for now, and really for as long as possible- not because I'm anti tv, just because it's a lot for them to process & not "necessary" yet.

  • And to answer your question when you do start shows, any of the pbs, noggin, sprout or some Disney jr shows are great I think!

  • Baby Einstein is great! My baby 3 months and ever since two months she watches appropriate cartoons, she does not watch it for more than an hour , But I see that tv is no harm, I would see no harm to keep your baby entertain for the road trip(: all babies are different and you should give it a try.

Hmmm...I am not sure how much your 3 month old will get out of a video, but if you think it may work, give it a try.

When my older two were young, they really liked HBO's Classical Baby videos. Very well done and entertaining. We bought them in a set.
