Could I Cope?

We are already thinking about baby number two, and have half heartedly discussed starting to try at Christmas. It took us 2 years to get and stay pregnant with this LO, and we are both considered of advanced age so don't have loads of time.

But I wonder if I could cope with a 1 year old and a new born.

Has anyone had children this close together? And would you do it again? Looking for words of experience and wisdom as I'm worried it could be too overwhelming for me and a lot harder than I imagine, but I also want my kids to be close in age as well as the other factors.

I also have my 9 year old step son to run around after every other week so it's not just me and LO all the time right now but 9 is a pretty cool and easy age to cope with on top of LO.

My first two are 18 months apart. They are 5 and 6 (almost 7) right now. Honestly, it was harder for me going from 2 to 3 then it was having them close together. At first I was pretty overwhelmed, but got into the groove pretty quickly. You just have to be organized and you can handle it just fine! :)

  • Mine are 28 months apart so older than what you're considering. However my 2 cents is I would have been nice not to have DS1 on the cusp of potty trainging when DS2 arrived. We'll likely have to wait several more months to train DS1. However it happens you find ways to deal.

  • DD1 didn't walk until she was 15 months old. I don't know what I'd do with two non walkers!

DS born 9/3/13; DD born 7/22/15; LO due 5/28/18
FS (age 5) and FD (age 2) to become AS/AD very soon!

  • My first two are 15 months apart, I wouldn't have it any other way. I had loads of family support though, my parents helped me through the transition.

  • My two are just shy of 17 month apart and I LOVE it, but I will put the disclaimer out there I have two very mellow babies!

My only concern when pregnant was when DS would start walking I was afraid he wouldn't start walking until after LO arrived and I wouldn't be able to help steady him durning his "wobble" stage. Lucky for me DS started walking at 15 months so we had a month with a walker before LO arrived. Other than that were just winging it but I wouldn't trade it for the world having them so close together.

  • It also took us two years to get Emma, we are thinking about starting to try in April. They would be 18 months apart if we actually got pregnant right away. My ob also mentioned not waiting too long to have a second if we wanted more children. I think it will be challenging but esp if it is another girl I would love them being so close in age as they get older. Besides I have always wanted 3 kids and would need them pretty close in age if we were to actually have 3.

  • Mine are 24 months apart. It's tough some days.

I actually think having kids one year apart vs two years would be so much easier. My first at one year old was a dream and didn't get tough until 22 months. Now I feel he is constantly pushing boundaries and being a crazy two year old. ;)

Whatever hardship it is now will be awesome in a few years. I like that they have more than a year separation but will still be able to play well together one day.

I was wondering too. I thought either typo or maybe adoption?
  • My oldest two are 20 months apart. I agree with whomever said going from 2 to 3 children was more difficult than having two close together in age. Now, we are outnumbered!
