Gave in to a craving... And feeling guilty about it!

Sooo we went to our favorite seafood restaurant tonight with some of our friends and family… I've been craving nothing but seafood so far and this time oysters sound especially good to me! The table ordered two dozen oysters I was planning on NOT having any but forced myself to stop at 3 (even though I wanted all 24!). This can't be THAT bad right??!! I mean some women don't even know they're pregnant at seven weeks and do worse! Help... #feelingguilty

  • I think that everything in moderation is completely fine. My MW told me that I can have sushi once a month as long as it's from a trusted source and not the deli counter at my grocery store.

  • Everything in moderation. I have no food restrictions all all other than things come from a trusted spires and consume them in moderation.

  • I agree, if this is a restaurant you trust - enjoy in moderation!

  • Same here! My ob even said French women in France drink wine daily while pregnant and babies are ok. He doesn't recommend daily but he was saying everything in moderation is ok. He said if you read everything on the Internet about what you can't eat and believe it all pregnant women would basically starve lol!

  • Ps I had Brie cheese yesterday on a grilled cheese sandwich :)

  • Oysters are fine. A lot of seafood is fine. You can google mercury content if it will make you feel better. Like PPs said, moderation is key.

  • Oysters weren't on the list of seafood my doctor said to avoid. I think the risk of them making you sick is pretty low. I wouldn't eat apex seafood (shark, swordfish) during pregnancy but I think oysters are fine.

  • I'm at this amazing hotel with my MIL, SIL, and yesterday they brought us a complimentary snack tray with Brie, goat cheese with herbs, candied nuts, jams, and crackers. I ate almost all of the Brie and some of the goat cheese and I didn't feel at all guilty. It was amazing! Enjoy yourself in moderation.

I would give anything for sushi right now! I already know exactly which roll I would get too. Mmmm...
  • Ahh thanks ladies I feel better lol I figured since it was in moderation it wasn't THAT bad... But I wanted to make sure I wasn't just reassuring myself to feel better lol

    Sushi sounds AMAZING!
  • I had like 3 egg rolls yesterday :/ my weakness this go around lol..
  • Oysters that are cooked are fine, in fact they are really good for you. Raw meat of any kind, along with unpasteurized soft cheeses and juice, come with a risk of bacteria that can make you sick and your baby very sick, and it can cause a miscarriage. Is it extremely unlikely that you will contract a disease from these foods if you know the food is fresh? Yes. But the risk is still there. If you eat these things in moderation, you are only lowering your risk, not eliminating it.

I know that this response is an unpopular one here, but I just felt like some clarification was in order. I'm not normally one to be super paranoid and careful about what I eat. I plan on drinking beer and wine in moderation in my 2nd and 3rd tri. I asked my dr. about sushi b/c I was really hoping for a green light, but I got a bright red one instead.

If you ate a few raw oysters, you shouldn't feel bad at all. And I'm not passing judgement on those that eat these foods. I'm only trying to share information so that people can make an informed decision. :)
  • I ate two cold Subway sandwiches and half a pack of raw cookie dough last week, and I had a medium-rare steak for dinner two nights ago.

No guilt, just yum. It was all sooooooooooooooooo good.

  • Relax! Eat whatever you can stand, in moderation, of course. Do not beat yourself up!

  • Oh man raw oysters sound so good right now. I've broken all sorts of rules. I wouldn't make them a habit but I wouldn't worry for a second about your mini indulgence, we need it sometimes!

  • I've had Subway, seafood, Apple Cider, coffee, and a Diet Coke this week. Gasp!

It's all about being comfortable with where you are eating. I wouldn't eat lunch meat/seafood from the van around the corner, but going to a clean/reputable restaurant -- I am fine with.  It's like I eat them all at once or all in one day.

  • I knew I shouldn't have read this post. Now all I can think about are raw oysters and sushi! My food confession is that right after my appointment with the OB nurse, I went out for a large medium-rare steak.

What's wrong with apple cider? That's my shit. I practically drank a gallon of it by myself.
