Nurseries and Baby Gear

Changing table & dresser

I have an older house so the rooms are big. The nursery also has a walk in closet with plenty of storage space. I've been contemplating using a changing table with 2 storage drawers as well as a dresser or chest of drawers in the nursery because I have the space. Is anyone against using a changing table and prefers the changing pad on the dresser? I'm a FTM so all the decision making has been overwhelming.

Re: Changing table & dresser

  • I know a lot of people don't like to buy a changing table because they don't like furniture that can't be repurposed, but I love having a changing table. I love the storage options, and keeping all diaper related items separate from the dresser. 2.5 years later and we still use the changing tables every day.

  • If you have the room go for it ! I'd like to keep the diaper stuff separated if I could . Right now we have dresser/changer/hutch combos and I need more space .
  • Great! Thank you for your input ladies! I have been going back and forth but really leaning towards having both.
  • Both of my kids have a tall 5 drawer dresser and then a shorter/longer dresser/changing table combo.  If you have the space I would suggest doing the same.  That way after you no longer need a changing table, it's just another dresser with extra drawer space.  I am not a fan of regular changing tables because when you no longer need the changing table, it's useless.  It's a waste of money IMO.

  • We registered for this plain changing table.  After we're done with babies I figure it can be reused as a bookcase:

  • I far prefer a dresser to a specialty table, designed primarily for diaper changing, because it has much more flexible uses. The one caveat is that, before choosing a dresser, make sure the height will be comfortable for both you and DH to change the baby.

For our first child, we got a dresser that had a removable rail around the changing area on top.  Once we finish potty training him, it will be a regular dresser.  Now that we're buying furniture for Baby #2, we're planning to get a double dresser without a changing rail because the changing rail was actually kind of a pain.  (It wouldn't prevent a baby from falling off, and to keep the changing pad from slipping, we put a rubber non-skid rug pad underneath.)
