Antibiotic Question

DS has/had another ear infection and is now on an antibiotic for it. I was instructed to give him 10 ml once a day for 10 days. In the past...or ever...when I've given or taken an antibiotic the medication is gone after the instructed amount is taken for the 10 days. Anyway, Mase still has antibiotic left after today (day 10). Should I still give it to him to finish it up or should I stop? I've always known not to stop an antibiotic early, but this doesn't seem like I would be.

I ask just because it makes him a different boy. He's so angry and pissed off all the time right now and I can't help but wonder if it's upsetting his stomach or something. Obviously I'd like it if he were done with it, but I don't want to risk the infection coming back. He did have an appointment with an ENT Tuesday for tubes consultation and the ENT said he didn't see any infection, 7 days after starting the medication.

Anyway, thoughts?

What antibiotic is it? C has been on a lot and our pedi always instructed us to throw away whatever is left over.

Could you call the nurses line to ask? If it were me, I would throw the rest away.

C just got tubes a couple of weeks ago. It went great. Are you going to go ahead and have them put tubs in? Hopefully, no more ear infections!

Thanks, @Luvsd!! I left a message for the nurse. I wasn't told to throw the rest away, but I also didn't anticipate there would be any left over. Which now I feel like an ass because every time he's been on antibiotics for an ear infection it was amoxicillin and there was always some left and I kept giving it to him until it was gone. I don't know what made me ask this time around. I guess because it's making Mason so uncomfortable, I feel. This time they have him on cefdinir.

He is going to get tubes put in on Monday morning. My DD had them at this exact age and it was the best thing we ever did. I think I even commented on your thread when your DD was about to get tubes about it saying everything would be fine and your LO will feel so much better blah, blah, blah and yet here I sit sooooo nervous. Handing your baby over is just hard no matter what!!

I'm glad Chloe is doing so well!!

Our pharmacist instructed us to toss whatever was left. They usually give more than you need, so once you've met the Dr's instructions, you're not stopping the antibiotic early.

I would definitely throw it away if it was me. I've had the pharmacy send too much or too little many times at work.

I agree with the pp about throwing the rest of it away. In regards to your son's mood while on the medication, maybe his belly is upset due to the antibiotic? Antibiotics can do a number on your GI system. The 2nd time I had to give DS antibiotics I started using a vegan probiotic and he seemed to tolerate the antibiotics much better that 2nd time around (less irritability, less diarrhea, less gas) Of course your DS could be in a bad mood simply because his ears hurt, but maybe adding a probiotic would be helpful if he's on antibiotics again?

Hey guys, thanks for all the responses!! I did end up throwing the rest away last night.

Thanks, too, for the probiotic suggestion. I've had him on one since about three weeks old because his pedi recommended it to see if it will help him be a little less fussy. It's seemed to really help with that in general!!
