August 2012 Moms

FFFC

It's supposed to rain all day and H is taking the car. Howell has his second flu shot today and I am seriously considering postponing it because it's a mile walk from the train.

  • @Baker_Bride I vote postpone! It's yucky outside.

  • I am a terrible mother.  I thought I was in the clear with timing, but B will only have his 1st flu shot before Disney, instead of both.  I feel awful.  The nurse said he will have some protection from 1, just not the full amount.  Bad mom.

We go to NYC next Friday. I was kind of under the gun here too. Target gives them. I'm going to call and see if they can give the second round. I'm breaking up with my pedi anyway.

  • I really want to do nothing but snuggle babies today. But I have a ton of school work to do and I have to get this house cleaned this weekend. It's been two weeks since I even vacuumed and much longer since I dusted or mopped. I can't put it off because I have a busy week ahead and plans next weekend. Wah!

  • I dozed for an hour yesterday while Elijah was playing. Normally I nap when he naps but I was busy at naptime. When 2:00 hit, I couldn't stay awake anymore. I laid down on the couch and he was quite content playing with his plastic dishware. He came over a couple of times to wake me up and I remember rubbing his back, asking him where his bus (Little People school bus) was, and making sure he was playing with it before I'd doze off again. I should feel bad but I needed that nap.
  • I don't know if Nolan got a flu shot yet. I'm not sure if it was part of the shots he got at his one year. I think I'll call and ask. Especially since he's about to change daycares. New kids, new germs...goodness, it's going to be a long winter.
  • My cousin was late (forgot) getting B a birthday present and asked what to get. I said a toy kitten, one that moves and purrs, so he said he just shipped one. Truth is that kitten is for ME! I miss having a cat and DH is pushing getting a dog so much I want B to like cats. I'm so gonna watch TV snuggled on the couch with this kitten after B goes to bed!!

When it cooled down this week, I heard mice in the walls. My cat did too and after a week of terrorizing them, I haven't heard anything. A dog can't do that. We were thinking of getting a dog but I think I want another Patrol Cat.

Same here! He gets his second round the week we get back. He's currently sick and on 10 days of antibiotics now, I just hope he starts feeling better before we leave next weekend.

Hope you guys have a safe and fun trip!!

  • I stayed for Lexie's dance class last night so I could write down the steps for her routine to practice. She is seriously the most uncoordinated kid ever and I want her to practice at home a little bit. She freaking loves dance but she is terrible at it. If I'm spending the $$ on class/recital then she's going to practice and get better.
Haha, this made me laugh. I only wish some of my students' parents cared this much! Btw, nice to see you 'round these here parts! You've been missed!
Thank you! We ended up getting a hot spot so we could fiiiinally get internet at home since our move :)

  • I noticed after putting T in the bath this morning that there were a bunch of hairs in the tub from personal grooming earlier this week. He didn't drink any water and it was super quick because he pulled his earplug out, so that's not too bad, right?

  • I think uggs are uggggly.

Me too but I love them! They are like slippers on my feet all winter. I don't care if I look crazy wearing them.

  • I don't understand what purpose uggs serve. They are too warm and not waterproof.

  • I guess this is an UO but I forgot to do it yesterday. I have not liked a single meal I have cooked in the crockpot. It never turns out for me and I just end up mad I wasted food. I'd rather braise in the oven on the weekend and eat quick cooking food during the week.

  • I am not a very adventurous eater. So when Lexie picked lamb to eat a few weeks ago I sang Mary Had a Little Lamb when she tried it.

When the meat counter guy at Hyvee asked me if C was walking yet, I told him that I was an experienced mother of four and I pay the kids a quarter to knock Carson down when they see him start to take steps.

I signed a paper saying that G would take a lunch from home on his field trip and then forgot about it. Yesterday morning as we are running out the door 20 minutes late he asked me if he could take his lunch. I told him not a chance. After we got to school his teacher asked me where his lunch was. Crap. Crappity crap crap.

  • I smoked a cigarette last night. Halfway through it I realized I really just don't like it now. I used to love it. I'm going to give the pack to my buddy ttoday.
  • I bought two new bras with my correct bra size. They fit great, but my boobs feel gigantic. I hate it. I liked my girls better when they were deflated and floppy feeling right after I stopped trying to bf. I guess that's more of a UO, but my confession really is how I hate my gigantic boobs.
  • DS was crying/whining all day yesterday for various reasons so I picked him up while trying to make his lunch with one hand. He kept whining and lunging out of my arms so I said "what the FUCK DO YOU WANT?!?!!" DH came in right when I said it so I felt doubly bad.

    Scary mommy.

Don't feel bad. I've done that too. I can't wait for DS to be able to talk and express his feelings so I know what he wants. I've tried several things including toddler-ese and he just whines even louder.

  • @courtneyeeps, I am feeling like that is Em every single day right now.  It SUCKS BALLS.  Today we got home from play group and all the kids were stomping on my last nerve and J or A asked something and I yelled at all three of them "because EMERY IS SUCH A CRAAAB!"  I hate feeling that way and I hate acting that way.  Ugh.

I felt horrible the other day after being short with Kate for the same reason. My husband said that evening, "You've been whining about her whining all day." Then I kept staring at the monitor, watching her sleep after she went to bed, and wanting to go and pick her up and cuddle her because I felt so guilty. We all have those days.
  • I hate feeling like that too, GWP. I get nervous about having more than one because if I lose patience now...what happens when there's two or more?

Thanks for commiserating guys. It's nice to know I'm not the only one with a short fuse sometimes.

I am the same! I have discovered that the secret is to fry everything up first (especially onions and garlic). Brown all meats, and then add everything to the crockpot as you would into the oven to braise. If I don't do this, everything just tastes like GD boiled onions. YUCKY!!!
See, I would rather do that in a dutch oven and put it in the oven because then you have to wash two things. I also could never time it right when I was working because we were gone ten hours a day when you factor commute so by the time I got home, it was always mush.

  • @Baker_Bride and @Lilidragon re:the crockpot. Since I cook veg meals at home, I love my crockpot for soups and chili. It does a great job with lentil vegetable soup and the black bean sweet potato quinoa chili I made this week. Also! There is a great slow cooker Indian cookbook. I've made aloo gobi and dal in it and it tastes just like I made it on the stove. But then again, I've only used my slow cooker for vegetarian meals.

Recipe for the black bean sweet potato quinoa chili, please...?

Most of what I love from my crockpot is soup. "Meals" just don't turn out too well.

Here's my thing though, why would one choose to use a crockpot over another method? I feel like the timing doesn't add up to be useful to me. Could you leave a soup for eight hours? I could see it for making beans since they take forever, I suppose. And it was awesome for keeping my mashed potatoes hot for thanksgiving or my chicken tikka masala hot for Boxing Day. I just always fail at making things in it.

  • I have fallen in love with crockpot meals since I started SAH. For me I prep and throw everything into the crockpot when DS goes down for his nap at noon. We usual eat at 6 or 6:30 so it cooks for 6ish hours by the time I actually turn it on. My three pieces of crockpot advice are 1)put meat in frozen not thawed, shred about 30 mins before eating and mix back in 2)I typically only use 1/2 of the onion or other overpowering items a recipe calls for 3) i prep items that will get squishy fast and store in fridge (like carrots) then dump in half way thru. For me having dinner prepped and cooking during naptime is easier than trying to cook and entertain a one year simultaneously. I prep oven meals like lasagna or casseroles during naptime too so I only need to pop in oven later while ds is awake. I only cook meals at dinnertime maybe 2 times a week.

My FFFC is inspired by my lunch at Sonic today while running errands. This might only be flameful to the Chicago area bumpies but I don't like Chicago Style Hotdogs. If it didn't have relish I would be good but relish makes me gag.

I adore my crockpot. For us, I put everything in the crockpot before leaving for work in the morning. H turns it to "keep warm" before he leaves for work at 5 and when J & I get home at 6:30 dinner is done. From the time I get home till J is in bed is less that 45 minutes. If he is up past 7:15-7:30 is he a terror so I have to have food ready before I get home or he is going to eat something fast and not healthy. I have found some amazing recipes for freezer meals so maybe that is the secret. I put everything in frozen, the liquid, veggies, meat, everything so it takes longer to thaw and cook so it is never overdone.

I prefer crock pot meals to save my sanity on long days. When I was SAH rather than doing research/working, I could actually spend the time I needed to make the food the right way. Now, three days a week, I'm not home until 4:30 or 5:00. I'm exhausted and cooking something isn't on my radar. That's when I'm more likely to do drive-thru, order pizza, or go out to eat. Crock pot soups save me from that. I prep all the ingredients the night before and throw it all together the next morning. It cooks all day and is ready when I get home.

  • Also, the crock pot is perfect for chicken taco meat. I throw in some chicken breasts, a jar of salsa, a can of Rotel, and cream cheese and let it cook all day. I shred the chicken 30 minutes before we're ready to eat and serve on fresh tortillas with avocado.

  • Confession: I kinda want to get rid of all my pets. I know it's terrible. We have 2 pit bull mix dogs and don't have the time to give them the attention they need. I'm also scared that, while I believe they are really good dogs and would never intentionally hurt DD, something bad could happen. A friend's 12 year old Golden just bit their kid's face after LO fell on the dog while he was sleeping, and LO needed plastic surgery to repair it. My cat is just a pain in the ass. :-/
  • Geez...I feel like I am NOT going to make any friends here with my posts the last couple days!
  • @cheerilee I very rarely follow a recipe. But the rough estimate of what I followed is here. https://www.thekitchn.com/vegetarian-recipe-black-bean-sweet-potato-and-quinoa-chili-166739

I was lazy and used a can of beans and didn't have the chipotle in adobo so I used a little more chili powder and a touch of smoked paprika. I also sautéed the onion and garlic first before I added it to the slow cooker. I cooked it on low for about 8 hours.
Thanks!! I never follow a recipe, either. I like them for starting points, though :)

  • the crock pot is amazing for pulled pork too!
You speak the truth. I made that once when we were in the Porkies and I forgot that was the one flipping amazing meal I have made. It was so nice to come back from hiking to an amazing meal.

I am finding it way too amusing that you made pulled pork while in the Porkies.

I don't love this confession, but I get it. I love both our dogs, but I am terrified something is going to happen. I would never do it, ever, ever, but some days I am do terrified about something happening that I do think about them not being here.
I know what you mean about getting rid of the pets. I was *this close* to leaving our beagle in AZ when we moved. But honestly, I am so glad we took her. It seems the time apart has made her and DS best buds. She lets him hug her and pet her now, whereas before, she would get all restless and anxious. It's crazy. Maybe all you need is some time apart for the affection to come back for them.

YES!  This is DD every. dang. day.  I say "WHAT DO YOU WANT, CHILD?" to her all the time.  And she points in some vague direction and says something very intentional yet unintelligible, and it's even more frustrating.  And then there's my dog standing at the door, wanting to go out, wanting to come in, wanting to go out, etc.  MAKE UP YOUR MIND, DOG!  And then there's DS who CAN communicate what he wants, but chooses to grunt & fall on the floor crying instead.  Or repeat his demand, loudly, 167 times in a row.  This is why I'm going insane.

I think about this a lot because my lab/pit mix is a runner. We've only been in this house 3 days and she got out today in the rain. I would never get rid of her, but she is such a pain sometimes.
