Tried the pacifier today

Little girl is 2 weeks and 5 days old. We were going to wait til around week 3-4 to introduce the paci like suggested by the dr to prevent nipple confusion. She is nursing so well but there have been times when I know she just wants to suck but isn't hungry. Broke out the paci today, and we gave it to her during her fussy time of night, and so far it's working like a charm! Who knows, maybe just maybe she will sleep better tonight! Fingers arms and toes crossed!

  • We introduced one Sunday at 1w2d. She doesn't love it but it does soothe her eventually. And we have had no nipple confusion. She still nurses like a champ.

  • I tried to introduce one today, but she kept spitting it out. Did you have that problem at all? If so, how did you get your LO to accept it?

  • @juliebird8307 we gently hold it in place while rocking her. She starts sucking then gets distracted/falls asleep and it would fall out. If we held it in place for a bit we had better luck.

  • We introduced one a couple days ago at almost 3 weeks. It's only for bed time, really, but it's worked wonders and hasn't changed her feeding habits at all.

  • My DD doesn't get it...she bites on it and spits it out. I don't have the patience to hold it for too long for her lol.
  • Newborns don't have the motor planning with their tongue to hold it in place yet, so they will often spit it out. They get it eventually with practice.

  • Our little girl uses it just when she is on the brink of falling asleep. Glad you had some luck / it's been a great tool for us!
  • DS wasn't too interested in his pacifier at first but it's starting to grow on him. He used to suck on it and constantly spit it out and then want it again. We've been working with him by slightly pulling the pacifier out of his mouth when he is awake so that he immediately starts sucking on it again. It's supposed to help train them to have better control over it.

  • Thanks everyone. We'll keep trying. I think it will help LO sleep longer (or put off the nighttime feedings for a little).

  • When we were still in the hospital, the nurse gave my daughter a pacifier when she was two days old. Against our wishes, because we want to breast feed. So, she relies on it to comfort her now, but she never had nipple confusion, thank goodness. She's two weeks old, and we only give her a pacifier when she's crying and nothing else calms her down.
  • I don't really believe nipple confusion between a paci and breast feeding. One gives food, one doesn't. It does however make more sense with a bottle since they both give food.

  • We started giving a paci to DS a week or so ago. We mainly use it during the witching hour when he's just eaten but still super fussy and we want to eat dinner. Usually DH has him in his lap holding the paci in with one hand and eating with the other. I also used it yesterday when DS woke up to eat just as the exterminator showed up.

  • You also may need to try different types. DD doesn't like the Nuk pacifiers that our LC recommended, but she likes the Avent Soothie.

  • We gave our DD a paci at 2weeks. We are BF too and she never had a problem with nipple confusion.

  • I broke down and gave DD1 a paci at like 3 days, my nipples were torn up, milk wasnt in yet, and I just needed a break. She was fine and we nursed fine for almost 10 months. I held out longer with this baby, but we started at about 1.5 weeks or so.. She takes it sometimes, but does spit it out a ton. It seems like she just needs it for about 30 sec it so and then is calm and spits it out and usually falls asleep. Like pp, I did want to say to try different kinds, we've tried about 5 kinds and for us the Avent is the one she prefers. Good luck!

I also don't quite believe in nipple confusion. I think babies are a lot smarter than that. But who knows, it's all theory. I am waiting until the one-month mark to introduce bottles and pacifiers. I was going to not do pacis at all, but DH is requesting it for comforting purposes. I got the Avent Soothie and ordered a puppy Wabbanub as well. Sounds like everyone else has had great success stories so I'm hopeful it'll do our LO good. :)
  • We've been trying the soothies, with no luck.  I got the Nuks yesterday.  So far she's sucked on that for about a minute

  • We have just tried the mam so far, but I also have a nuk I can try. So far she takes it sometimes and doesn't at others. She's still so young, I'm going to continue to try to use it for at least another month.
  • we tried a paci at one week during a fussy period where he wanted to use me as a pacifier and threw up a stomach full of milk. he was obsessed, he loooves to suck- unfortunately it messed up his latch a little though so we are waiting another week to try again. I could tell the latch difference right away. and he was frustrated too. FWIW he used a soothie in the hospital for his circ, so that's what we had on hand. I have an assortment to try in a bit once we have the full hand of breastfeeding.

This is the same for me. We've used a pacifier since day 2 and haven't had any confusion. We did wait until he was 2 weeks to introduce a bottle as recommended by a LC as the perfect time to. We wanted to be sure he would take one when I'd go back to work. The LC also told us that the pacifier shouldn't be an issue from day 1. Sometimes babies just like to suck.

  • My little guy still doesn't really like it, every now and then he will take it for several minutes but usually it makes him upset!
