Babies: 6 - 9 Months

overstimulated or spoiled?

My in-laws watch my 6.5 month old son 3 days a week while I work, and every time they've had him all day, he's grouchy, fussy and needy in the evenings.  He's not like this on the days I've had him all day, and it makes me worry that they're not heeding my request to let him have some alone time.  I'm at home by myself with him, so I simply can't pay attention to him and hold him 100% of the time, and I try to encourage him to play independently regardless, because I think it's good for his development.

It makes me feel like crap when I've been away from him all day, missing him, and then when I get home, he's grumpy.  Anyone else have any problems with this type of thing when someone else has been acting as a part-time caregiver?

Re: overstimulated or spoiled?

  • I personally don't think that you can spoil a 6.5 month old baby. Is he getting good sleep/naps while he is with them? Maybe he's just tired.

  • Yea, I've asked them, and they got really defensive about it and made a "log" of all his naps the next day, so I'm really hesitant to keep asking.
  • What time do you get home from work? If it's in the evening, maybe that's his way if signaling that he has had a full day of overstimulation and he is ready for bed.

  • It sounds like he is either tired an rest for bed, depending on what time you get home (my LO goes to bed between 6 and 6:30) or else overstimulated. My ILs (FIL, in particular) don't leave DD alone when she is there. They are constantly playing with her, wanting to how her, moving her where she wants to go (when she would prefer to crawl herself) and just generally in her face, even when she is trying to eat, and she is used to some indepent play, and prefers not to be her the majority of the time. Have you seen their interactions with him? I didn't realize how bad mine were (with her, not as people or caregivers) until I actually witnessed how they acted around her one night.
