My Emma Rose is here :) Birth Story and PIP

Emma was born on Tuesday, October 8th at 8:23 am, after roughly 12 hours of labor, about 6 hours after my water broke. I'm not sure how I did it, but I was able to do go med free like I wanted. It was the hardest thing I've ever done. I'm glad I had no idea what to expect. If I had, I might have caved and got meds. Highlights: modesty goes COMPLETELY out of the window and I didn't poop (on the floor anyway!) The doula caught my baby because no one else made it in the room in time. Here is how my little Emma came into the world:

My husband left for work at 8pm on Monday. At 1:30 that afternoon, I had my weekly appointment where I declared a "loose 2" cm dilated and scheduled a NST for Friday (damn, that's today!), since I was 3 days over. I had been feeling contractions for about 20 minutes before he left, but not long enough to say that it was going to be that night, so I didn't say anything and off he went to work. I started timing them while watching Avatar on TV; they started ranging from 2-7 minutes apart, so I texted him around 11 letting him know what was going on, but that I didn't need him to come home yet, just in case they died down. I decided to see if I could get some sleep and laid in bed for a couple of hours. I think I got a half an hour of sleep. At 2am, I felt and heard a POP, got up, waddled to the bathroom with a towel between my legs in case I started gushing, and went pee. I texted my husband with the update and asked him to come home because my contractions immediately intensified. I also let my doula know and asked her to come, since she lives 45 minutes away. DH got home about 10 minutes later and we packed up our last minute things and headed to the hospital. The plan was to labor at home while we waited for the doula, but she suggested we head to the hospital since it seemed like it was happening really fast. Thankfully our hospital is only about 8 minutes away, because contractions in the car were awful. As soon as we got into admissions I gushed all over the floor and said "Oh shit... I'm sorry." The guy laughed and said it happens all the time. In the 10-12 minutes it took us to get into a room I had about 5 contractions that I really had to breathe through. Once in the room, they spaced out just a little bit, but intensified. I got on the birthing ball and bounced/rotated my hips through each contraction while waiting for my doula to get there. I don't remember how long it took her, but I remember her being there a lot faster than I expected. The contractions were really getting bad, so she used counter pressure while I breathed/moaned through them. After a while the ball wasn't helping anymore and I needed to get into the bed for intermittent monitoring. I also needed to lean back for a while, so I stayed in bed for a couple of hours. I don't remember what time it was, but by this point the pains were excruciating. They were also following a pattern of contraction, rest, contraction, rest, then 2 contractions back to back. This was the worst part, not having a break between those two. There was maybe a minute or so of rest between the contractions to begin with, which was amazing. Every contraction I thought, give me drugs, I need something, anything to just take the edge of, but once the contraction was over I could think again and remember why I wasn't getting drugs. At some point I couldn't cope anymore though, and started asking for drugs during contractions. DH and I had set up a code word, banana hammock, so that I could vocalize and ask for drugs without worrying about actually getting them. Doula suggested we get into the shower, so I headed to the bathroom. I had been to the bathroom several times before, since a full bladder makes contractions worse, but I HATED sitting on the toilet. It was not helpful at all.  This time I basically "cleaned out" and had several contractions on the toilet. I wanted to die...but I could hear my doula talking to DH, saying "she's really close, she must be in transition." All I could think is "oh God, but what if I'm not??"  At some point she came in to check on me and I wish I could say she came in after the epic poo, but nope, she was there for it all lol. I honestly couldn't have cared less though. I got cleaned up and braced myself against the sink through a few contractions. I was reluctant to get into the shower because I was afraid it wouldn't help, and then I'd just be wet on top of things. At this point my body started bearing down with each contraction, trying to make me squat and push. I had no idea how dilated I was, since my last check was at that earlier appt, so I didn't want to start pushing if I wasn't ready, plus it hurt like a mother to push. I got on all fours and stayed on the bathroom floor for a while... I can't even describe the noises I was making. I didn't sound human lol. Everyone said I was doing fantastic and was a rock star, but I didn't feel that way. I felt like I wanted to just give up. They wanted to do a monitoring session on me and wanted me to get into the bed. It was unfathomable at that point, so I asked if I could just move closer to the bed; they said we could try. So there I was, crawling across the floor basically naked because the damn hospital gown was like a Chinese puzzle and we never got it completely fastened, so it was just hanging off of my neck. They couldn't get a good reading in that position, so I miraculously got into the bed and sat up for the minute or so it took to get my hooked up and read her HB for 30 seconds or so. My body had been laboring down for at least an hour by this point and I could feel her moving into the birth canal, so I asked to be checked. I was on my knees hugging the back of the bed when I asked and there was no way I was moving, so the nurse checked me like that. I started contracting and told to her stop, but she was able to tell I was completely dilated. Even though pushing was excruciating, I told myself that it wouldn't end until she was born. At this she was descending in the whole "2 steps forward, 1 step back" type deal, so I really had to focus and work with the pushing. The nurse had left to get the midwife, thinking I still had at least a few minutes, but I basically said f*ck that and started pushing with everything I had. One contraction and she was down enough to where I could feel her head; one more contraction and her head was born. It was still just DH, the doula and myself, so DH ran out of the room to get someone. One last contraction and out she came and was caught by my doula. The relief was AMAZING. We got immediate skin to skin contact for about an hour and a half and she breastfeeds like a champ (although I'm currently dealing with sore nipples and engorgement :/) She weighed 6 lb 6.6 oz and is 19 1/4 inches long. Right now, I don't ever want to do that again lol, so we might be one and done. The memory is already fading though, so we'll see in a couple of years lol. She was 100% worth everything though.
