SBR: Toy drives and greed

Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of toy drives. I love that children can have a nice Christmas even if their parents don't have a lot. That said, my mom runs the toy drive at the school where she works. Parents have to sign up in early November, and it is always very well funded and received. However, she has gotten phone calls from parents in the past few days who ask "when do we come up and get toys?", people who never signed up, and who are some of the wealthier parents at the school who already have plenty of gifts for their kids/kids are in designer clothes NOT bought on clearance or second hand/etc.. I am just a bit disgusted by the greed of some people who just use a toy drive just so they themselves don't have to buy more gifts for their kid. Does anyone else know people like this?

  • That's awful. I always think about where toys are going when I donate, which is a bad way to think. But I've seen first hand where some of these things go, and some of the people I've seen are not needy. I'll keep giving though because I know there are tons of needy people out there.

  • They really should have some guidelines for income/need.  We've given to toy drives at church before for kids with parents in prison, and we know the families and know they are in need.  It's terrible that there are greedy people like that out there, but maybe the toy drive needs to set some basic standards for who can and cannot get toys.

  • Unfortunately yes, I do know people like this. ?I only donate to organizations that screen their recipients.
