Poll: Are your wedding rings insured?

edited October 2013 in September 2012 Moms
I got the bill for our jewelry insurance today, and it got me wondering.... How many people actually insure their jewelry? We have a special policy on our wedding rings and my engagement ring. So tell me. Do you have insurance on your wedding/engagement rings?

  • Ours are included in our homeowner's insurance. My DH had my engagement ring insured before he even gave it to me :) He has no faith in my ;)

  • For those that have it on your homeowner's policy, is it covered if it is stolen/lost on vacation? What happens when you sell your house and you don't own right away, is it more like a rider that you can keep open?

Mine are with the same company that has our homeowner's insurance but we have my rings and DH's dirt bike insured separately because they are likely to be damaged/stolen not at our home. And when we moved here we just had renter's insurance for awhile.

  • We have a separate policy for all of my jewelry, not included in our homeowners. DH's ring is not insured.

  • @hmp1 in NC homeowner's insurance only covers jewelry up to $1500 and it doesn't cover things like lost on vacation. That's why there are Personal Articles Policies because they cover loss and mysterious disappearance in addition to stolen, damaged, etc.

Disclaimer: my insurance licenses are expired and it's been 3 years since I worked in insurance, so don't take all that information to the bank!

I lost my ring at the tanning salon right before we got married. The employees "found" it a week later after the detective stopped there, but we had filed all the paperwork and it would have been covered for us.

ETA: maybe that's not applicable, but I thought maybe it is because I was away from home.

  • I never looked into it. I guess I should.
  • My wedding ring was $250. So no.

  • Our rings cost under $200 and were bought at Walmart. Needless to say we don't have insurance on our rings.

  • We have it through our homeowners insurance but it is a separate rider so it does not matter where it is lost/stolen.  Our homeowners only covers $1000 in jewelery and my engagement ring is worth a lot more than that.  We do not have H's separately insured because it was only a few hundred bucks so it is covered under our regular policy, and it would not be a big deal to replace it (financially).

  • Mine is covered through Kay. I have to go every six months for inspection. They're covered if they're lost, stolen, or damaged. DH paid extra for the plan, but I don't know how much.

  • They are covered under our renter's policy, but we do not have special insurance on the rings.

  • My engagement ring is specifically insured, the wedding bands would be covered under our renters insurance.
  • Ours are covered under our homeowners policy. DH called and had it covered as soon as he walked out of the jeweler with it. Knowing him it was probably before he walked out the door ;)

Which reminds me that now that we sold our condo, I better be sure our renters policy will still cover it. I'd cry if it was stolen. It's not just that it was an investment, it's also not a run of the mill ring.

My licenses are not expired (though I don't use them) and in the DMV you can have them covered under the jewelry portion of your policy, but it is the same $1500 for the company I worked for. OR you can add them as a rider. Then it is covered for the appraisal (or receipt) amount for any reason, lost, stolen, stone falls out, etc.

I have this same plan on my diamond earrings, but I cannot for the life of me find the paperwork, which means Kay won't cover them anymore.

The jewelry rider that is on a homeowners policy ($1500 for theft) is also on renters policies. You should always carry a policy so there is no lapse in coverage (andplusalso, it is more expensive to get insurance if you have a lapse - even if there is no need).

You can also add the same rider to your renters policy to cover for the full amount and any reason.

  • Ours aren't. I asked my H about it, and he said while they (as in my wedding band and engagement ring, not his band) were expensive, it wasn't worth it to insure it. He said it would be less expensive in the long run to replace them out of pocket.
At my old company it was about $10 per $1000 for a year's worth of coverage. So long term, depending on the cost of your jewelry it may or may not be worth it.

  • All three of my rings are insured, I have no idea about H's.  His first band was faulty, and somehow ended up super scratched and awful looking after about 6 months.  Luckily, our jeweler is the uncle of one of H's best friends, so he took the ring back, and gave us the full cost as a credit toward a better ring.

  • Our insurance would only cover up to $1500, anything more than that would be a seperate rider which would end up costing us a lot. In the matter of a few years we would have paid more than the rings were worth. so, no, not insured

    Same here
  • We got married when we were still in college and pretty much broke. We wanted to pay cash rather than putting them on a card, so they don't cost much. No need to insure.

This is what we have too. We wouldn't be in a position to replace them otherwise if they got lost or damaged.

The stone was my grandmothers so it is kind of irreplaceable, that said, it isn't insured. I'm bad about stuff like that.

    Edit:

DH is on his second cheapo ring. He lost the first one in a river and this one has been beat all to shit. I'm not buying another one. He can get a tattoo.
  • Yes ours are insured. Both my rings (engagement and wedding band) along with DH's diamond wedding ring. He has 2, one he used to use for work at his other previous employer and a nicer one for off days or going out. It was surprise from me to him on our wedding day. Our policy is through our homeowners insurance company but not with the actual home policy. We pay separate each year for it.

  • Also I think ours is $10 per $1000 in value.

  • My rings are, DH's isn't because it was like $300.  There's a rider on our home owners insurance that insures my rings, a tennis bracelet and a pair of diamond earrings and my gun.  It costs an extra $13 or $14 per year.
