Intro/help

Hi all! I've been lurking for about 10 weeks now. I'm 16 wks and 6 days with mo/di boys. Everything has been going well so far (fingers crossed) and I had an appt with my ob yesterday. I've been waiting for this appt because he had told me in August that I would start seeing a perinatologist after this appt.. Well he said the same thing yesterday and the office told me they would schedule it and call me to tell me when the appt was...

Cut to today, the office called me and told me I am scheduled for my level 2 US on November 7th. Which blew me away since my ob said I needed to get in there for their next available appt. Has anyone else waited to start seeing the perinatologist until 20 weeks? I asked the scheduling girl to review with my ob again since I think that's waiting too long.

Sorry for the long post! Thanks for any advice in advance!

Re: Intro/help

  • My ob tried to tell me I didn't need to see one until after 20 weeks but I knew better. They saw me at 18 weeks for my a/s. I wouldn't wait until 20 weeks with mo/di twins because of the ttts risk. Those babies need to be scanned at least every other week preferably by the mfm. I would continue calling until you get the appointment you need or go somewhere else that can see you sooner. Welcome and congrats!

  • I am seeing mine for a consult on Monday when I will be 14 weeks. I'm not sure what my appointment schedule will look like after that. I pushed for an earlier appointment after they offered me some times later in the month. Perhaps you could get on the cancellation list if something opens up?

My RE is actually the one who recommended the appointment. My OB didn't actually feel it was necessary, but I wanted it for piece of mind. I'm sure some of the others here will have more helpful responses, espeically those who also have mo/di twins.

  • Is your OB doing growth ultrasounds or monitoring for TTTS?

I had my first monitoring for TTTS (also having mo-di twins) at 16 weeks which was done through my OB's office at a specialist ultrasound place (this was at my request), and then my first MFM appointment at 18 weeks.  If you've already been checked for TTTS through growth ultrasounds and everything has been looking great, then I'd be less concerned, but if your first check isn't until 20 weeks, then I'd certainly question the reasons why or push for an earlier appointment.

  • Thank you all for your advice! I have an appt now for 10/23 which I'm told is the next available.

I had an US a week ago at 15 wks 3 days and the babies were measuring very close in size. This was the first time I was told that it looks like there is only 1 placenta. Although the tech did tell me that the Obs equipment isn't great and it may turn out to be 2 placentas next to each other.

Thank you all again for the advice and feedback!
  • I saw my MFM at 12.4 weeks but that was because we did genetic testing.  I have been seeing him every 5 weeks, which will get bumped up to more often after our 29 week scan. (Di/Di)

  • I would recommend getting in touch with a perinatalist or mfm who sees the need for you to be seen sooner. Not to freak you out, but TTTS is something to keep an eye on and it's so rare that a regular OB may miss it. I had just gotten the 20 week in-depth scan to find out the sex of our twins & the ultrasound tech totally missed that we were in serious trouble--they had the good equipment, too! Thank God, by coincidence, I saw my perinatalist 2 days later because we needed medical intervention fast & they saw it right away. It really is rare (in my OB's 30 years in practice, I'm his second case), but it's def something you'll want a specialist to be on the lookout for. You don't have to be a jerk about it, but you are your kids best health advocate--be proactive, make some noise, and get seen sooner if you can.
