Working Moms

Working mommy in Fairfax, VA

I am expecting my first in the middle of March. Unfortuantely I am unable to be a stay-at-home mom so I am now on the hunt for daycare. I am really hoping to find an in-home daycare in the Fairfax area, specifically the Fair Lakes area, or near Fair Oaks hospital. I am looking for any and all recommendations. If you know someone please feel free to email me their information at talonekr@yahoo.com or respond here. Right now I am more stressed about locking in daycare than I am giving birth!!! If only teachers made a million dollars ::sigh::

  • If you have not done so already go to the Virginia Dept. of Social Services website that lists daycares in Virginia (you can search by zip code).  You can find out if they are licensed (which, to me, is very important) and what their inspection and violation records look like.

    https://www.dss.virginia.gov/facility/search/cc.cgi

Here's the key - when you look at an individual listing, you will see an entry for "License Type" - you can have up to a 3 year license, with 3 years meaning you are going basically above and beyond; two means you are meeting the standards; and, 1 means you have had some issues.  Once I figured that out, navigating this website became so much more manageable.  I immediately ruled out all the 1 years, looked to see if there are any 3 years and started with them (they're aren't many and they are often full) and ultimately ended up focusing on the 2 years and started reading through their records.

In the end, though, meet them in person (obviously) and also ask them for references and then trust your gut on what feels like the best place for your LO.

I'm not in Fairfax so I can't help with a specific recommendation but hopefully these tips will help.  GL to you! :)

  • There is a DC area board on the bump with lots of nova moms. I was going to suggest the website PP just posted about. Several of my friends have found their home DC through it. Good luck and stick around on this board!

Or better yet, follow the "wondering why the board is so slow" post to the off board most people went to.

  • Hi, I live in Fairfax and have my daughter in an in-home daycare.  I found her through Infant Toddler Daycare (https://www.infanttoddler.com).  Infant-Toddler is an umbrella organization that employs, trains, and certifies in-home daycare providers in the NOVA area.  It is awesome and not too pricey.  It is also nice for me to have a third party involved  in the whole in-home daycare experince.  Good luck!

  • If you haven't seen this already, this is a great board for daycare info:
