Mirena IUD

Has anyone had any experience or know anyone who had this? After 3 kids we have out complete family :) but I am not ready for any perminent fix. There doesn't seem to be any side effects other than bleeding in the 1st couple months. Anyone have a different experience?

Re: Mirena IUD

  • No personal experience here, but I have a girlfriend who had Mirena and unknowingly hers fells out- she just found out she is pregnant with her third. I'm sure she falls into a small percent of people that this happens to, but just wanted to call out that it's not fail proof.

  • I had mirena placed 12 weeks after by first. I had bleeding on and off for about 6 months and then it went to regular periods. After about a year of having it in I started getting yeast infections about a week before my period was due. It wasn't every month but after having them on and off for 6 months my np let me know it was due to the mirena. I had it removed to start ttc and haven't had a yeast infection since.
Though I had a good year of having it in, the risk of increased yeast infection makes me not want to get it again.
  • I had the Mirena before DD1. It made my periods really light. It still has hormones, which I am really sensitive to. It made me moody and anxious. I have also had the Paraguard and like that one better because it doesn't have the hormones.

  • I had a horrible experience. Everything was ok until I went to have it out. It became dislodged and into my uterus. Almost through the uterin wall I was seconds away from surgery to have it removed when the doc grabbed it. It was more painful than childbirth

  • My friend got pregnant on it....she now has two kids under 2.

  • I was also thinking about getting an IUD, but some of these comments are making me rethink that plan.

The same thing happened to my coworker. Her IUD fell out without her knowing it. She didn't end up pregnant but it definitely gave her a scare.

  • Just a fyi, I've heard an IUD allows conception but doesn't allow the baby to implant in your uterus.
  • I was leaning towards getting this as well but now i'm not so sure after some of these comments.

  • My sister is on her 5th year with an IUD. Unprotected sex and no pregnancy. She's getting it out in January to TTC!! She did say that having it inserted was very painful but it suppressed her periods which she liked.
  • I was also gonna get this but after reading some of these it makes me nervous. It seems like there is always something with everything tho. :/ I def don't want to end up pregnant for a long time.
  • I mean really the only way to not chance having another child is to just not have sex. There's going to be something with everything. Someone's going to know someone who knew someone who tried whatever kind of protection and it failed. I just had the Mirena put in about a week ago and no complaints yet just some spotting, but I sure hope it stays put!

  • After the 5th year, my sister had hers removed to try conceiving again & miscarried at 10 weeks. After my cousin removed hers (again after 5 years) she went through 3 miscarraiges before having her second child.

  • Thank you ladies! I was one who got pregnant on the pill :) so these comments are making me rethink te IUD and stick with wrapping it :)
  • No experience with it yet, but I'm getting mine in a few weeks.  My OB said it's best to get it inserted around 8-10 weeks after having the baby because your cervix is still kind of open and it's less painful.

Mirena thickens the CM so the sperm can't enter the uterus, prevents the sperm from reaching or fertilizing the egg and thins the lining of the uterus.

  • I just got this inserted on Wednesday. Some of the comments make me nervous, but as PP's said, there are side effects with everything, I suppose. I'm glad to see that some of you have had good luck with it, though. I decided to go with it because the pill never really worked for me, and my doctor recommended it as a personal recommendation. She has had 4 kids, and has used it in between her kids and absolutely loved it. It was a little painful when it was put in, but nothing unbearable, and the cramps didn't last very long at all. I go back in 6 weeks for a "string check" and to make sure it's still properly in place.

I used Mirena for about 4 years before TTC and I absolutely loved it. It was a little painful going in but that only lasted about 30 seconds (the pain is comparable to getting your membranes stripped IMO). With Mirena, I didn't have to worry about taking a pill every day or putting something in and out every month like the ring. Plus, the hormones were so low that they didn't affect my sex drive like other BC. I am definitely getting Mirena again in a few weeks. I loved it and recommend it to everyone.

That's good to hear! I was looking at the copper iud to avoid the hormones. After ten years in pills of various types, ring, patch... Sex drive had been dead for years. Only got it back after being off bc all together so I really wanted to avoid any hormones. I hadn't heard anyone else talk about sex drive with mirena.
  • I've had two and had great experiences with both. After a month or so of spotting after insertion, I had no period the whole time it was in. I'm considering the Paraguard this time because there's zero hormones with that, but I may end up with the mirena again. For some of the above comments, I really don't understand how an IUD could fall out of your friends' vagina without them noticing, but that's just me...
