Uterine shenanigans

Apparently our little guy is trying to gear up for birth a bit early.  So far he's moving pretty slowly...I'm having contractions, but my cervix is just barely dilated, I lost my MP (which never happened with Em and really grossed me out), and my cervix is shortening.  I've been in and out of L&D, but all they can really do is pump me full of fluids because my heart stuff makes them unable to really give me the other drugs that would stop labor.  They did hit on the idea of giving me Ativan, which worked during the last visit when the fluids didn't.  My doc is just trying to get me to last until 34 weeks at this point.

Now I'm on pelvic rest and what my doc called "semi-bedrest".  I can't go out walking around a lot, lift much, or do housework, but I can move around enough to take care of Emily, which is good because I don't have a lot of other options there!  I'm avoiding lifting her by having picnics on the floor, changing diapers on the sofa, etc.  She's been awesome, but is definitely already tired of having to stay inside most of the time.

So I was wondering if anyone has ideas of things to do with her to keep her occupied?  So far we've pretty much exhausted reading, cartoons, and coloring.  She's becoming bored with her toys.  I have her "help" me do things, like I let her throw all of her clothes in the washing machine and then push the buttons (which ended up in some of her clothes being weird colors, but whatever).  What else would you suggest?

  • Stay put baby!!

DS's favorite time-consuming thing is a stack of books. He also likes his shape sorter; it makes him concentrate for a long time.

  • Hang in there girl. You just have a little longer to go! How about finger painting in the bath, playing with the Tupperware or pans, or sweeping. Can you look up sensory play and see if you have any of those items around?
What good ideas!  I will look up sensory play right now, but the finger painting in the tub thing is genius.

Could you make a makeshift tent with a sheet or an afghan blanket and prop it up with a few pieces of furniture? For some reason "tents" are fascinating and playtime gets a whole mot more exciting under there...just a thought!
I made a tent for her before, but it was a teeny one, just barely big enough for her to sit in...maybe I'll get DH to help me set up something tonight when he gets home.  She enjoyed the little one, but I think a bigger one would be much more interesting!

  • I'm sorry @eafogel, I hope he stays in there for awhile yet!

Riley loves pushing things around the house, especially empty boxes or anything that moves easily. What about music? Can you play some children's music and "dance" a little? Or try bubbles? Riley loves catching them with her tongue. HTH. Good luck!!

Grr, it won't let me out of the quote box.  We do listen to a lot of music too, and she will sometimes stop and dance with me.  She likes 80's rock!  We haven't done bubbles in a while...that's a good idea.  I can let her play with those on the porch.

These are great ideas so far J12, thank you so much!!!

  • Stay in there, baby!  Sending lots of closed & tight vibes your way, @eafogel!  Let me know when you're ready for soft & open ones instead.   ;)

Hang in there!  You're doing a great job for BOTH of your babies!

  • Hope your little boy will stay in there for a bit longer. I had contractions with Veronica at 32 weeks and went to L&D but they were able to stop the contractions and she stayed put until 39 week...

    Hang on there :)

  • Wow!  Stay put little guy!  I hope you are able to keep him in until 37 weeks, so rest up as much as possible mama!

As for Emily, I would have done everything that you already suggested.  We still use the exersaucer and it will entertain her for about an hour with some snacks in the tray.  Can you reintroduce old toys as new ones every couple of hours?  Sadly, we live for Disney Jr., so Chloe gets to watch that when she is bored with everything else or I need to keep her occupied for more than a few minutes.  Do you have an iPad?  If so, there are amazing apps that are great for learning stuff.

Good luck with everything and I hope your little guy decides to bake for a few more weeks. :)

  • Maybe a new toy/book/kitchen utensil?  I know that LO is fascinated by new things and she will play with them alone for a bit.  I hope that LO stays put a bit longer and you feel better.  I am sending positive T&P your way!
  • Stay in there little guy!

Zach likes when I get out mixing bowls and wooden spoons and baking things and we sit on the floor and "make stuff".  We put wash cloths in the cups of a muffin tin, then take them out.  Or he really loves unfolding laundry if he can get to a basket full of it and then he climbs in.
