What about the hands?

I know we've had several discussion threads about what we all dress LO's in to sleep, but I'm not sure if this question ever came up or not in those threads. This might be a silly question, but what about the hands? I know my LO likes to be swaddled right now, but she's starting to break her hands out more often, and I noticed last night that her hands were pretty chilly when she woke up for a feeding. She's not going to be swaddled forever.Later on, when we move to more of a sack as opposed to a swaddle, I'm just not sure what to do to keep her hands warm. Is this even something I should worry about, or is it a non-issue?  She's not much of a fan of the mittens used to help avoid scratching, so I'm not sure how well that would work. FWIW, we keep the house between 68-72 degrees. BTDT moms, any advice?

Re: What about the hands?

  • Thanks. I felt rather silly for even asking, since I know that their hands/feet are usually colder than other parts of the body. I just know if my hands or feet are cold when sleeping, I don't always sleep well and just wondered what others did or are planning to do.

  • I asked the same question a few weeks ago and the general consensus was that it's perfectly fine for their hands to be cold, as long as their body is staying warm overall.

  • Their core will take heat from the rest of the body. It's common to have cold hands and feet. I just try to keep those little tootsies covered.
  • We put LO in just a long sleeved onesie, with the ends that fold over her hands.

  • We put dd in a too big sleeper at night, the sleeves cover her hands. Seems to help.

  • Don't feel bad about asking. I asked the same question a few days ago when I started to swaddle with arms out. I tried mittens and they come off and not all her sleep gear has the foldover sleeves. I put her in the long sleeve footie pajamas.

this.  or socks on their hands.  or the scratch mittens.  Honestly, I wish every single newborn onesie had the foldover mittens.  I LOVE THESE
  • Don't worry about it. It's normal for hands and feet to feel cold

  • My son always had cold hands while sleeping and we never figured anything out lol!
  • My little girl is the same. Her body is warm though so I try not to worry.
  • I appreciate the insight, ladies. I'm not sure where I was when this question was asked before--maybe I read those during the middle of the night when I was half asleep? I'll definitely try some of these suggestions, like the longer sleeves, and if nothing else, I guess her hands will just be a bit chilly. Thanks!
