Anyone else here using cloth diapers? This is baby #2, but my first go at using cloth diapers. I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong.
I can change baby and then as soon as she wets the diaper it leaks out the side or up the back onto her clothes or whatever she's sitting on. Also, I double stuff her diapers at night - she sleeps all night - but she has been waking up soaked some nights recently.
Should I start doubling her diapers during the day and tripling them at night? That just seems like too much stuff.
Could there be something wrong I'm doing with washing them? I put them on a pre-wash cycle cold, then they go thru a hot long wash cycle. Then I double rinse them. I follow exactly what the tags say.
Re: Cloth diapering issues
I would guess the problem is either fit or not enough absorbancy. Are the inserts completely soaked through when you change her? If so then, if she pees more on top of that there is no where for it to go except out the sides. We have a plethora of inserts of different thicknesses (depending on brand) including MF and hemp. For day, we usually use 1 thick MF (kawaii) + 1 hemp (hemp babies) + 1 thinner MF (bum genius). This has worked pretty well for us and we put that combo in all different pocket brands (BG, GoGreen, kawaii) We usually change about every 2 hours unless baby poos and then of course change right away.
We used mostly pockets for DS1 and obviously using them for DS2, but I added a bunch of prefolds/covers to the stash for DS2 and I love them the most because they *never* leak. We use both one-size and sized bummis covers with gussets.
For night, we use a large prefold with a Babykicks joey bunz hemp insert in an angel wing fold + PUL cover. Zero leaks. When baby starts peeing more at night, this combo may not be enough (remains to be seen) so we'll add a wool cover to see if that helps. I can't recommend the joey bunz enough - super absorbant but not a ton of bulk.
Cloth diapering can be quite frustrating until you figure out what works for you. It was a lot of trial and error for us! Read as much as you can about troubleshooting leaks and you'll figure it out.
