I make "refried" beans with canned black beans - add a bit of water, taco seasoning, and smash then lightly (about half the beans smashed, half whole). I have served this as a side dish and also smeared in a quesadilla with shredded chicken. My kid loves black beans.
She will eat them plain, whole or smashed, but she LOVES them smashed with salt, lime, and a teeny bit of jalapeño, hot sauce, or chipotle. Just a little.
I give them to the boys plain, and they've also had them mixed with cooked green bell peppers. I crack open a can, drain and rinse them in a colander, and put them straight on their trays They LOVE them.
We just give them to her warmed up. She LOVES black beans, and could probably eat them every day for every meal if we let her. It's messy though, so definitely be prepared!

DH cooks the beans like he does for us and I smash them between my fingers to make them flat for DS.
